Default Advice needed on equipment for newbie setup

    Hi all,

I've been reading the posts here for a couple of years and am finally going to attempt my first home setup but I've no idea where to start, here is where I'm at.

    - I was given a dish/feedhorn and cabling that was taken off a house being pulled down. I'm assuming it was for Foxtel or something but I'm not sure what it was previously used for

    Sharp KU-LNBF BS1RSAR228
    L.O 10.7Ghz
    11.7-12.75 Ghz
    1000-2050Mhz

    Spaun SMS 241F multiswitch

There is also cabling and a small dish

I am based in Sydney with good views north from my balcony of most of the sky. Can anyone recommend

    a) A receiver I should buy, cheaper the better
    b) If there is anything else I need (I guess I'd need a satellite finder to help tune it in)
    c) A couple of satellites to start with to point the dish at

I've been reading over the other posts about how to find satellites, watched tutorials on tuning etc so I think I'm ready to go, am just a bit confused about what receiver to buy and where?

As I'm just starting out something cheap and cheerful/simple will do, who knows I might even get hooked on it.....

    Cheers,
    Hayez.

    firstly id get a box
toors selling a pretty good budget box in the bst section(its got its extra perks too).

I reckon if you've read through a few tutorials, watchd a few videos get a reciever and give it a go. If you get stuck come back and ask some questions. Most of the blokes on this forum are very helpful.

best of luck mate, its a great hobby, im glad i got into it.

Not a whole lot free to air, but is possibly the best starting point.

There's also always plenty of cheap and cheerful FTA boxes on eBay. Once the bug bights ..... you'll end up with half a dozen in any case

A satellite finder is helpful and cheap.

view from the balcony. So if you can locate due north ... you've got it.

You did say 'cheap and cheerful'?

Free to Air (FTA)? Then shop for price on eBay ... most of them will work

Better quality. Get a Strong 465XX series. These will support most subscription satellite paytv services (but not fox/Austar, unless it's a pirate card), with an appropriate providers card.

Get a cheap box that is hackable...a Humax 5400 (about $100 in the buy/sell area of this forum)

(a)Get a Selectv subscription or gamma card to suit.
(b)Definitely make an aurora gold card.
(c)Find a seller with a gamma card for all the good foxtel stuff.

The Humax will take all the above at the same time.

Since you are in a unit with balcony that is the best you can hope for.

C-band 3 metre dish may be a bit obvious......

Dreambox will teach you zero...except tapping on keyboards.

That's about all you'll be able to do

Thanks Farmsky and z80 for the advice, I'll read up on the Humax/Strong a bit more and see how I go.

haha, the other half will make me sleep out on the balcony if I attempted to rig something like that up out there.
