Im looking at picking up one of these shortly, just for internet, word processing, watching movies and messing around with the unix cli.

Has anyone here used one yet? any thoughts? negatives / positives etc?

I know they arent the most powerful unit in the world but thats not what im looking for. I just need something light and portable. I wont be installing windows on it because thats not what it was really deisgned to do. I would be upping the ram though to around 1GB and getting a 8GB SDHC card. At 1Kg much lighter than my old inspiron 640M that i used to lug around.

As far as I know, they have no optical drive, only a solid state HDD of 4 or 8 gb [not including the space for linux] and cost about $500.
You can get a good "normal" lappy for only a couple of hundred more

yehh good point mandc but im not really after a normal lappy
ive got one right now, i bought a special backpack for it as well cost about $140 to carry it around, its still way to heavy. Im thinking with the eeepc i can just put it in my shoulder bag and off i go.

has anyone here used one yet?

I bought one for $400 in thailand, 4 gig with spare slot for memory upgrade and removable cover for upgrading ram.

came with xp loaded.

If you are doing a lot of travelling, they are excellent. With hacked video driver they can do 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768. not perfect but fine for web browsing.

make sure you get an 8 gig or a 4 gig with spare slot. wi fi works very well, battery life up to 4 hours. usb slots power up when charger is plugged in, so you can use it as a usb charger for phones etc.

you can get a proper laptop for not much more, but if you do a lot of travelling, these are excellent. they will fit in a ladies handbag.....

or in a workbag etc, you don't even notice them.

i use mine with a telstra/zte 165 with 3 gig data pack. get up to 215kbps sustained downloads.

they will accept the new gen sd cards, so adding 16gb storage is easy.

I got one of the first lot, It's nice and small, I've used it for traveling and will do so more later this year.

Anyone using one of these for GPS navigator in a vehicle
the screen size would be great(pity it's not a touch screen though)
and what software is available for the Linux OS for SatNav
