    Default noobie question

I've been asked to update the maps on a friend's TomTom as , apparently, he has a free update for them. He does not have a computer and has asked me as the "computer expert" to do this for him. I have said that I will look into it for him. From my reading here I guess that I will need the device connected to my computer. I know I can get maps from here but, if TomTom are offering free upgrades, do I just go to their website and work with them? Do I follow the seven steps in the sticky at the top of this forum? Do I need particular software installed on my computer to interact with the TomTom. I do not know the model of the device yet, so can give no more info yet. Any help will be appreciated.

I would stick to that, and download from that site.

Thank you for that, I'll give the bloke a call and he can drop the device off.

Depends on the model of TT what maps can be loaded and activated.

    What model is it?

If he has a tomtom with free lifetime maps just download mytomtom and he logs in with the info he gave after purchase and the mytomtom automatically does the updates

Finally got my hands on the device to do it. It's a Tom Tom Via 620 so I loaded myTomTom and set up an account (he does not even know how to turn a computer on so he has never been online with this device) using my email and password. Plugged the machine in and, Nothing! The myTomTom icon in notification gives me a popup saying that there are 4 updates available but the (I'm guessing) download button (blue thing in the top right hand corner) does nothing. The other menu entries just take me to the website where all I do is go around in circles. It's bloody frustrating. Is it supposed to be all automatic when I plug the thing in, or what? They FAQs and online help is next to useless.

If I'm not mistaken than you might have to link the Via to that account you created first.
Since there is nothing we can do with these models a request to the TT support might help.
