Here is the exact text of the first error message (it comes up as a pop up)
    can't open "G:\02. Flinder Ranges-Karen.mpg.idx2":0 (No Error)
    followed by another pop up
Cannot find a demuxer for G:\02. Flinder Ranges-Karen.mpg.idx2
    then a popup that says
    Could not open file
This occurs on several files, not just this one.

Bah! Just tried to edit my previous post, and it wouldn't... so...

The error also occurs on files that actually play properly in VLC so are "good".

The indexing is required for editing under Avidemux. If it doesn't create one there will be all kinds of error messages.
VLC should not need an idx file for playback.

Most Linux live disks would not have Avidemux preinstalled. You can run a live and use apt-get or yum or what ever command your linux uses to install avidemux (no caps) in the ramdisk created by the live disk. A password for root (sudo or su) is not required.

Thanks for your suggestions, I have decided that it is not worth my time to spend any more effort on this. I'll return the stick to the lady with a copy of my efforts thus far and she can muck around with it when she feels like it.

Not that simple, Bazzle, it's not that the extensions are incorrect, just that the files are corrupt.

It can also depend on the type of format that the other memory is using. There is that format that does restrict the number of files that you can copy on the memory. Check to see and make sure it is FAT32

This was last dealt with 6months ago, I have long returned the stuff to the owner and have no more dealings with it. FWIW most memory sticks are, by default, formated to FAT32. I am well aware of the limitations of DOS filing systems having started my computing days back when DOS was the new kid on the block.

Instead of NTFS - which of course is a possible file system for USB-sticks - as file system the older FAT32 is recommended for USB sticks - otherwise the stick works not in older versions of Windows, or in units of consumer electronics such as consoles and players.
