This has worked somewhat. I have been able to read that the device comes up with the following info:
    "USB\Vid_04b4&Pid_5500&rev0000 USB Human Interface Device"

This does not help me much. I Googled the above and managed to find that Cypress Semiconductor is the manufacturer. Still could not find a driver anywhere.

Went a step further and cut through the case moulding to see the chip.
    The numbers below come up "CY7C63723 - SXC 0405 A02 663306"

Searching on "CY7C63723" also points to Cypress Semiconductor, but still no where to find a driver to suit this USB to serial converter!!!

Does anyone have this driver or can they let me know where to best get this!!!

here is the windows xp driver of CY7C63723 from serial usb 232

To install your USB Serial adapter please follow these steps:

    1. Connect the cable to your computer
    2. Notice an HID device installed int he device manager
    3. Right-click on it, and update drivers to the ones on CD
    4. Now attach your serial device
    5. Reboot the computer
    6. You should see a COM port added (COM5 COM6 or COM7)
    7. Use this COM port from your communication app

    Thank to AdapterZ (point)com

    Holy thread revival Batman!!!

Do you realise this thread is 8 years old?

I doubt the OP would have waited this long for a driver solution and likely found another cable etc.

You never know though... this driver may help someone.

    Thanks for posting.

Ummm, I think your calculator is broken or you had your socks off when counting.

Well maybe they changed things & 14-8=8 nah it's still 6 on my calculator.

That driver may be handy for someone in a time warp?
    Cheers, Tiny

Nothing wrong with warming up this thread as this problem will NEVER go away.

My last solution was to spend 2 hours going through the specs of every second hand lappy on Ebay to find a working one with a true COM and LPT port.
Found an awesome IBM Thinkpad 600e for $66 with enough RAM running XP snappier then any WIN7/8 machine and cheaper than some of those useless adapters.
Just love how fast it switches on and off like a multimeter, which is basically what I am using it for, but an extremely high featured multi-channnel one with conditional output control via the LPT port.
It seems now also impossible to get a USB to LPT adapter, just some sort of USB printer device which is useless for the electronic geek.
Update: A deletion of features that work well and ain't broke but are deemed outdated in order to add things that are up to date and broken.
Compatibility: A word soon to be deleted from our dictionaries as it is outdated.
