What I want for IPTV

Hi,
This might be pie in the sky.
At the moment I have access to On Demand through my VU+ box. This works very well for BBC and I can access iplayer and save content to another PVR, quality being very good. ITV player is not as user friendly so most of the time I watch through my laptop ( I can't record and save to watch at another time ). The quality through my laptop is not as good as through the VU+.( don't know why? ).
What I would really like is a box that allows me to record programs using a timer for live content, as you would with pay tv without the cost .Is this possible now or in the future?

The MAG250 has a record function but when i tried it said something about stream not supported so wouldn't record.
