Hey all.
I have an alarm system. Bosch Solution 16 plus, It works great, but when sending it back to a monitoring center, over a voip line the receiver they have dose not pick it up. why is this?
I was told it had something to do with the tones of the dial. can someone please enplane to me why this is?

Time to upgrade to a wireless monitoring solution.
Monitoring over VoIP is hit and miss. Some router, ISP combos play nicely where as others compress the life out if it. Monitoring also introduces other complexities into the mix that VoIP doesn't like such as handshake/transmission/kiss off timings. VoIP can add "lag" to these for want of a better term. If thyre are out of the expected threshold of your panel or the receiver, it'll never work.
It's extremely bad practice to attempt to use VOIP for monitoring a security system.
I would not entertain the idea, as apart from the points raised in other replies, basic internet access, the basis of VOIP, can not and is not considered to be be reliable for such uses as monitoring purposes, emergency communications or similar situations.
Use the conventional method or wireless as suggested!
There are many reasons why using a regular VoIP service might not work for your alarm system. You will not get any help from the alarm community as their answer is to sell you a GPRS unit, but you can find information on the Internet and within the VoIP community that will help you understand the subject.
Once you find out how to get it to work and you understand about the redundancy (or lack thereof) of VoIP networks, you will be in a better position to decide whether or not you should use VoIP for back to base monitoring. Find out what alarm format your alarm panel uses prior to doing your research ;-)
I remeber seeing that a NZ company had made a VoIP ATA designed for alarms (was POTS compatible). This was a year ago at the time they were being sold for $400. I will see if I can find a link to the site.

$400 is OTT. We currently allow our Customers to use an 'off the shelf' Cisco ATA that is well under $100. We also have a solution under development that will allow the use of any make or model of ATA. Our network fixes the problems caused by VoIP and forwards a 'repaired' version of the alarm signal to the monitoring company.
