    Default Copying DVD's

Hi all, I have a collection of DVD's that I want to copy onto a portable hard drive so that I can play them on my TV in the caravan when travelling, and also as a back-up copy.
I have found that I need a "Copy" or "Ripper" program to copy the DVD's.
I have also found that I then need to "Convert" the copy to "avi" to suit the TV.
I have found that it takes about 2hrs to copy a DVD, then another 1 to 2 hrs to convert to avi. This would be very time consuming.

    My questions is:
Is there software available to do both at the same time, or do I have to have 2 different programs i.e. Copy and then Convert to avi.
Is freeware available? I would buy software if I have to.

I'm not very savvy with this stuff, so please be gentle!!!

    Any help appreciated
    Regards
    Rob

you need something to bypass any encryption, Slysoft or similar and then you can rip straight to your favorite encoder, Handbrake is easy and free, you can rip and convert on the fly like this, plenty of other similar software out there I'm sure, can't remember the software but I have another one on my PC at home which supports the video card I have, that can rip and encode a disc in around 15 minutes, first time I used it I thought it didn't work it was that quick

May I rain on your parade by saying that I had grand plans of doing what your proposing and like you was daunted by the time needed to complete each DVD to a HDD.
I bought my wife a small screen media player and converted a music DVD for her to use in the car when we went to our daughters, Fantastic you say but it took me a total of 5 HOURS to do it.........
THEN there is the problem that SOME discs dont like being copied if their copyrighted which doesnt become apparent until your finished the 'Burn' and the odd one that wont copy correctly and finally the HDD unit could crash and every things gone.
Earlier this year I bought 2TB HDD to be used as a backup etc and one day one of my animals somehow got tangled in the leads, the HDD fell about 2 feet and it hasnt worked since........
I have been hoping that perhaps at a future date we may be able to buy programs already to go on a HDD along the lines they are starting to do by 'streaming'.
But, in the meantime and being a lazy bastard, for cheapness and easiness, a dvd player and a box of DVD's is the way I would go.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

    + 1

But sometimes it is faster to download from the internet than ripping LOL

I with B4L there, Strictly speaking, you are creating a pirate copy of the stuff you own. Copyright and all that, a torrent site may be the quickest way of duplicating your collection to a HDD.

Try freeware which in the background uses , a complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. Works under Windows 95 to Windows 8.

Im lucky to have a 100mb/s connection so for me I download the MKV of the blurays/DVD's I own, only take around 20 mins..

But when I cant find the one im looking for I use DVDfab 9 im not sure why its taking your 5 hours, As a full bluray takes about 40mins top to rip/convent and I only have a 1st gen i7 old hardware.

If you want the whole lot (as in just copy the contents of the DVD's VIDEO_TS folder), then DVD Decrypter is fantastic for it.

If you're looking to have it in MPEG, AVI, MKV or another "normal" video file format, I've always used Handbrake.

I think DVD Decrypter is a bit quicker on average but gives you a gigantic file (full size of the DVD). Handbrake takes 20-30 mins for me and gives you something a lot more manageable.
