Landrovers are famous for that , even to the point that they reccomend the hoses be replaced every 4 years , and those shitboxes have 2 hoses to each caliper
Just had the father in law show me the brake hose off his ford. It has split at the top and sprayed brake fluid all over the front wheel. He was driving to the shop for mother in law to buy flour, stopped went inside bought flour and then went to put car in reverse and brake went to the floor.
Does anybody know if it's a common problem? I have never heard of a brake hose letting go.

Yep, its happened to me twice.
First case it was my XR6 Sedan, son had it and was out with his mates being a idiot getting my ceramic pads to get the rotors glowing, its was fun till one of my hoses split and he had no brakes.
Second time it was my BA XR8 ute, just a few weeks ago, i went in to get a new set of tyres fitted, when the wheel alignment was being done i was called into the workshop and asked if my brake pedal always went to the floor.
I jumped up into the car while it was on the alignment machine and yes the pedal went to the floor.
Got under and the front left was wet, followed the oil trail back and there was a large puddle of oil where they changed the tyres.
They claimed at first it was like that when i rolled up, i showed them the trail back to the fitting area and showed them no trail coming into the workshop or where i had parked outside and told them i just did all the brakes on it a few weeks earlier.
Then the workshop owner stepped in, he knows me well and told the workshop staff to shut the F up, who i was, what i did for a living and that any dickhead would have known they did it....
Go to Ford, they are cheap, i could have got my new hoses from my supplier but being stranded at the tyre shop i got my son to do a quick dash to the local dealership and to grab me some new hoses to do both sides.
Most difficult part to change them is to undo the metal connection on the engine side, you need a special ring spanner with a cut in it to slip over the pipe, you can undo them with a open ender but there is a good risk you may round the nut.
And dont forget to bleed your brakes.
On a scale of 1 to 10 of difficulty its a 1 if you have the right spanner. Bleeding the brakes is more work than replacing the hose.
its never happened to any of the Jap cars ive owned . brake hoses are double walled so are quite strong.
maybe the crimp wasnt done up tight enough at the factory ?
Who knows what the problem is, it's still a tad scary to think they could go just when needed. Father in law was saying in the handbook if front brakes fail then the rears are meant to take over? I find that hard when all the brake fluid is on the road. But thats ford jargon.
I'll talk to him about replacing both.

Its a dual system.
Before you change the hoses, open the brake fluid resiviour and look inside, near the bottom of the container is a wall to divide the front and rear fluid sections, when the front runs dry the rear system still has some fluid and can work as usual.
The pedal does go to near the floor but there is some braking left in the the circuit that is unbroken.
Hose are dual walled, this is a ADR standard, however any stress put on the line such as someone leaning on it, or replacing brake pads/rotors and not supporting the caliper (many people just let the caliper hang from the hose while they work) will stress it, as will age.
Tanks Zilla. hoses have been replaced, $67each. Bled the system he seems happy. See how long they last.

Ford had a vehicle service field action (not a 'recall' - they change them during dealer service) on BA rear brake hoses - they were known to fail under some circumstances. There are updated rear brake hoses the dealer will fit free of charge.

Yes rears were the problem, the hoses were too short from their supplier, in both my cases it was always the front left that failed.
Told my Son about this as he has a BA now and along with a couple of other things, spoke to a mechanic today and he confirmed the problem (Brake hoses) I told him about existed. (expert advise over anything Father says is always more acceptable)
This BA is fitted with LPG and it now appears that it has certain 'Issues' such as incorrectly installed Gas lines (wrong place/no heat shielding) from Tank to Regulator, no screening around the regulator? and the compliance plate is mounted on the 'computer' (Illegal) and not on the car body which according to the mechanic means the system could be removed and reinstalled by anyone in another vehicle.
He has all the paper work of when and where the previous owner had this system installed and its passed Rego as it is so it has me wondering about this claim by this mechanic.

I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
My wifes draw through mixer ring system on her BA has no heat shielding for lines.
I recon this guy is looking to make a quick buck in that area or being technically anal.
There is supposed to be a piece of tin that goes from under the converter and curves up and sits between the converter and the exhaust manifold which already has a factory heat shield from Ford.
Find a Ex taxi BA on LPG at a wrecking yard and grab one if needed, they shouldn't charge you more than $5-10 for it.
@ Sanity, the latest on the last 7 days has been he took the Honda S2000 to Lygon St with his G/F on Friday night, did a few illegal U turns looking for parking and had Hwy Patrol pull him over, book him for the turns and while there they slapped on a Defect notice because the Tyres were sticking out of the guards.
One a bright note, he jacked up the car and changed it back to some stock wheels, he took it to vic roads and cleared the minor defect and he paid the fines.
For once i didnt get all the work and sat back and laughed.
Especially watching him trying to remove the sticker from the window which was stuck on good.
