Take a look at a Humax. You can buy a caddy and install your own hard drive without extra activation like the UEC to turn it into a PVR. It then becomes a twin tuner PVR.

Hi All..
Just like to know, as there are a few more vast boxes now, I would like if there is at a good one out there for recording (twin tuner would be great) better than the old original UEC vast box.
Cheers

The problem with advising, is that we have not yet worked out a rating system to do a review on each decoder available, as most people only have one or the other. It'd be great to have all models available to a tester, and an article written on their merits. Alas, I can never see that happening.
To date, it just comes down to personal choice......perhaps a thread with a voting poll to show what actual users think would be an alternative?
The one I bought had no HD because it was cheaper. You can buy a caddy for $12 and supply your own drive if you have one handy.

IMO the best VAST box hasn't been for sale yet. It may not yet have been manufactured.
With the slim pickings of what's available I have owned a UEC DSD4121 with PVR upgrade since 2010, it does an average to barely adequate job of being a PVR.
I also have a UEC DSR4639; while it ain't perfect, it does an excellent job of being a twin tuner PVR, I have no regrets in purchasing it & would still do so.
I'm sure the Humax is a good box as well.
The Satking is also reported to be a good box for a single tuner.

Does anyone have any knowledge of new models for 2014?
There are already three brands available, UEC, Humax and SatKing and cams are/have been available, which can be fitted to the receiver of your choice - see . Having said that, the cams are intended for commercial use at translator installations.
The Australian market is VERY small, therefore I do not think that manufacturers would be tripping over each other in a mad rush to convince Optus to approve new models.
What does that mean "fit a cam to your receiver of choice"? Could I turn any PVR into a VAST-capable machine?
There are several threads concerning VAST cams - use the SEARCH button located top/right of page.
This is one - .
Quick read of that thread was not enlightening. What advantage do they offer in a nutshell? And what do you need to use them? Can anyone put the answers to those questions into 2 sentences?
It lets you use a good decoder for purposes more than what you can with a proprietary /knobbled/freeview certified box.
Boxes certified for vast are only made for that system.they won't accept a different cam or smartcard for instance. They will only tune for the channels meant for, no others, or no other satellite.
I'll stop there, coz there are more reasons...others can add their two sentences.
So how does one get them activated, I'm sure it's not as simple as a plain vast box
It's as simple as if you're registering a normal VAST Certified box. The activation form only asks for a smart card number. I think in the early days it also asked for a set-top box model, but this is no longer a requirement. Just punch in the CAM card's number and you're away.

I suspect the reason they don't need your decoder model or serial number is that when the card is married to the box or cam that info is scanned into a VAST database, then your address & name are added to the database when you register the card.
Hopefully 1 overzealous bureaucrat won't one day ask cam owners to prove commercial usage?

Can you buy a VAST Smartcard separately or must you still buy one of the 'approved' STB's with it?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
No you can't buy a card separately, you can however buy the VAST commercial cam with married card or VAST decoder with married card.

In simple terms, because I'm a simple guy, is it possible to buy something that would allow me to keep using my terrestrial PVR with the VAST system?
No, unless your existing terrestrial PVR set-top box also has a satellite TV tuner and a slot to insert a VAST CAM. You can always buy another set-top box that can do this, but it's not likely yours will if it was bought from a major electronics retailer.
