    Default My knob needs fixing

All my interior door knobs are Gainsborough passage sets. The one in the bathroom can be pulled off easily. I have tried "screwing" it back on but it never grips tightly. I don't know how it actually is meant to hold on. I can take the one on the other side off and back on and it is tight. Should I be adjusting the fingers on the plate or what? See the attachment. Thanks in advance.

at first I was worried about what you meant with yer knob mate
looks like the thread is stuffed mate
    buy yourself a new one
or if you want to be tight with your knob you can try taking the plate that's mounted on the door off and give the raised lip a bit of a squeeze in a bench vice (just slightly) so it becomes a little more oval (but don't overdo it)
hopefully that might grip a little more

There really isn't a thread as such though, well not in the usual sense. There are the three raised fingers that somehow hold the flange on. I have spread those fingers outwards a little and all seems tight now. Will see how it goes after some normal usage. edit, nope it still comes off.

there would have been a thread there but it's probably worn off completely
check the clip on this page at the 1.56 mark >
they are really cheap and nasty locks so it's probably best to buy a new one

No there was never any thread, the flange on the other side has no thread either and it does fix ok on its plate but not on the plate that doesn't work, I'll probably end up messing with the fingers until I land on the lucky position that works. Unfortunately the Gainsborough install notes does not feature this or similar set.

How about the pin on the shaft, is it locking in place when you put the knob on?

The center of the gold handle part is supposed to have a male thread on it.

The plate on the door is supposed to have a female thread.

If you cannot see thread, there's your problem, the threads are stripped.

OR the wrong parts are fitted.

I have this handle set throughout out my house and they are all like that.

The plate clearly looks like it does not have a female thread, id say the wrong plate has been used.

Does the handle have a male thread on it near the center?

No threads anywhere, trust me, the plate that works looks like just about identical to the one that doesn't. Also the gold flange part locks in OK on the good side, doesn't on the bad. The plate has worked just fine for almost 13 years. it is some sort of friction arrangement.

I was going to suggest that the easiest and cheapest way to fix is to remove all the hardware and get a skipping rope, pass through the rope through hole and put a handle on each end.
Simple to use, easy to replace and cheap.
If the Bathroom also contains the toilet and thats the only one for the house, that door and latch would really be subjected to much more use than any other door in the house and finding fittings to handle the constant use wont be easy.

Usually occurs because the screws have notches to cut to length due to varying door thicknesses. Screws are available from your h'ware store, there is metric and imperial sizes. What happens some times is they are cut too short and only secured by a small amount of thread which strips out BUT in a lot of cases if you can cut with a fine saw you can cut mid way between the notches thus getting enough thread to grab and if you use a little locktite (OPTIONAL) it will work.
Ps i have those handles too and they are a pain in the arse

    Nice thread name! lol
You are probably better of pulling that one out, measure up the diameter of the cutout hole and buy a new one...could get one for around 20-30 bux at Bunnings.

    cheers,
    Nick
