How old is the system, are the filters (if any) clean? is the area around the external unit clear and has a good air flow?
I was wondering if the external unit was in the full sun and with this extreme weather we are all having, if it was overheating?

I reckon If you tried it on Heat in this weather, it would melt the enamel off your teeth.

Its probably too late now, but when it happens again.
Remove the cover of the indoor unit and check to see if the evaporator has iced up. Or partially iced up.

If your system is getting low on gas, the evaporator will ice up, then the fan will do strange things .... it will hunt and pulse.

I have a sparky here at the moment relocating it so it will be interesting to see if it does it after it is moved. I have told him the issue and he is talking to a refridge mechanic.

Interesting one, it was a build up of dust on the head unit fan which is a big roller fan. Cleaned it, back to normal working order.

A friend told me reverse cycle units can ice up in Winter when on heat.
He said when the outside temperature dropped below a certain level, the exchanger would ice up and it would stop heating until the ice melted and for that reason, I read some use a heating element to reduce this effect.

It wasnt standard user maintenance unfortunately or I would have done it (2 filters are only user serviceable parts which I clean fortnightly as per the manual).

The body has to be removed to access the roller fan and also all the internal auto louvres, not fun, back together and wouldnt work, got it in the end.

Mine auto de ices in that scenario and its 7 years old so I would presume most modern units would do the same.
