Safety concerns ground Cootes Vic fleet
Updated: 05:52, Saturday February 15, 2014
Trucking company Cootes says it is too early to say whether grounding its Victorian fuel transportation fleet will affect supplies.
More than 30 trucks were inspected yesterday by VicRoads officers and major defects were found in 25.
The defects include problems with brakes, shockers, air bags and loose bolts.
The Victorian grounding following similar problems in New South Wales, where about 400 of the 12-hundred trucks in Cootes' fleet were pulled from service on Monday.

On my travels, I am always amazed, that 9 times out of 10, those freeway rta type large vehicle checking stations are nearly always closed, or the sign says "continue to highway". Their usage, to me anyway, appears very limited. No wonder many trucks are faulted when they blitz freight company premises...they probably think their chances of actually getting pulled in on a random check is very slight?

What do they check at those stations?
Just log books or more?

They will probably be on the road again in a few days but that won't stop the servos from getting a nice fat extra profit using that excuse for a few weeks, now that it is all over the media.
Beer no prob, DIY.
Brewing diesel is more my problem.

Tolls Express in sydney had major RTA tent put up at there site over 100 trailers and rigids go inspected all day
So the rta should inspect all company's fleet veichels
Before the 70's the NSW State Railway had a monoply on the transport of all goods both local and interstate which was a total hodge podge costly system but then the Government of the day decided to remove the term 'Common Carrier' from the Railways and allowed road transport instead to now 'Deliver the Goods', an option they took on with great delight.
This created a problem here in NSW at least in two ways, the trucks of the day werent that good at long distance haulage and the roads were totally inadequate to carry them so we have spent the last 40 odd years playing 'Catch Up'.
The trucks are far better today but many of the main roads are still in need of major upgrades so this apart from a not too strongly policed trucking industry regarding Road worthiness, we have seen several incidents that has caused much unwanted publicity on the industry, 2 at least causing fatalities.
The Government knows that if they were to really crack down on the trucking industry, the country would grind to a very sudden stop because the industry like us all, has 'cut corners' all in the name of fast cheap delivery.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
The railway freight is a hugely under utilised waste, in my opinion.
The main North South railway line passes by our place, about 1Km off, and we can hear these going by.
There would only be two smaller freight trains a day, and two at night...other than that, a couple of xpt's, the line is dormant.
Maybe this is because of the lack of a decent freight terminal at either end, to expedite quick loading/unloading, and trucking it, ends up quicker?
It's a shame that the railroad seems to be dying.
The rail to north queensland in much need of an upgrade hence toll wanted to sell it
