Dogs have direct wolf ancestors - to a considerable extent and the wolves were in turn partially dogs to their ancestors. This is the result of a study with which was investigated the genetics of 102 wolves, 57 Sheepdogs and nine mixed-breed dogs from Georgia (Caucasus).

Was shown in Estonia and Latvia before by genetic analysis, that individual wolves in reality wolf-dog hybrids were. The Georgian researchers believe that the genetic flow between dogs and wolves thousands of years was an important factor for the gene pool of dogs - and already from the beginning of domestication on.

Until recently these influences have been restricted probably by humans.
