If you are getting the M8 be aware it is not what it is cracked up to be, in fact it only does 1/2 of what a MX2 will do. How do I know? We also sell them as secondary boxes for users or as starter kits ..

My rule of thumb here is simple, if the box does not do what a Mac or PC will do, why bother .. The MX does just that and the M8 or cocobox does 60% of that.

And the BEST thing, is you can watch it anywhere, on any device or while driving if you like or at least while parked if you are 1up.

Those sport streams work perfect for me on a 3G connection, while tethered and also downloading on the phone at 1Mb/s.
    xbmc on a macbook.

I could be anywhere in Oz, so long as i have a 3G connection, i can watch my favourite sport if it is supported
If not, a download of it would only be 2 or 3 hours away anyway

So what are the actual Android MX2 units you use jonc? You mentioned before about non OEM etc (or not buying a Matricom MX2), which i didn't quite understand.
And there seems to be many boxes with MX or MX2 stamped on them.

How can we pick the better ones? Is there supplier or link to a box you purchase?

There is the trick in Australia and New Zealand.

We use a number of different internet solutions here in our house in the 3rd world, but with better than 1st world solutions, i.e fiber optic - shared 1st 3 floors, Docsys shared 1st floor and Adsl 2+ shared 4th floor but there is a big difference.

We pay a flat monthly fee for these lines with absolutely no data caps what so ever. So we use over 1TB per month on 8 boxes going 24x7 in the house on these 3 lines. We also have synology DS713+ NAS servers to feed the complete system i.e MX2 boxes, ipads, android tablets, all the mobile phones, PC's / Mac and Linux complete with itunes, http, media servers, it own cloud service which is beyond great.

It (Synology DS713+) also has serviio and plex but they do not even come close to XBMC so do not be fooled by your mates.

In the technology world, your country is A and our's is Z.

But we here mere mortals, as xbmc users, are all ears.

Shh as the ISP's will be up in arms. In most countries it is quicker and cheaper to use 3G or 4G. Here 3G delivers up to 22mbis and 4G up to 66mbis and as you say no matter where you are if you have 3g you have TV.

Having said that we also write android apps and they also work on Edge and H, and we also do what we call a quick TV app, which can be used on any android device to watch the telly. If I get 10 minutes I will do a sample in the morning and post a link here for everyone to use it.

jonc...is there something special that stops many of the streams that have the ITV (english tv) logo up, as if to say the channel will work, but it doesn't. It is very hard to get this one compared to the others.

We as I said do not buy from Matricom, but we do buy from a simular factory in bulk, non OEM branded MX2 units and it is the 2 you should be looking for MX2 - they have 4 rows of cooling slots on the bottom of the case, not 2 rows like on the MX box.

We do not use the Matricom branded and programmed OS we have our own which we use that works as it should, and a totally different boot up, 3D start screens (ours are similar to the areo air concept on Win7/8 which Ko Crap swimming around the TV screen, not the flat normal android start pages) etc .. everything pre-loaded including XBMC, email, web browsing, play store and list goes on and on. Apple airplay also on every box.

So if you are doing it yourself get a MX2 box and ask the seller on ebay to send you photo of the bottom of the MX2 box (most of them are old MX boxes not MX2 and the seller frankly does not know the difference)

Thanks jonc, that is what i was trying to understand.
I see a lot of this is covered at xbmchub, so i appreciate you are going over it twice here.

Mmmm so Air Play works on MX2? Brilliant... i had read it wouldn't work.

EDIT: Ah, so the Matricom is an OS.... Hence the Gbox MX2 is the same piece of hardware.... Just it sometimes comes with different branded OS? Or have a missed something.

Many things, and being a bit more specific might help us both out here. Try EXPAT TV by mikey123 if you do not mind being tracked, and that works well for ITV in fact all 31 domestic UK TV stations, as does F.T.V from XBMCHUB.

I have no problem re-writing the "wheel" code, that is what learning is all about (smile)

Yes you have read about the Matricom and other based OS's on Anroid, as if airplay never worked here my teenage kids here would kill me. They use the DS Video app (A synology app for the DS713+ NAS) on their iphones and then through the movie, tv show, music video whatever up on the TV via XBMC on the MX2 boxes, albeit there is a stand alone airplay app (and android to android version) in every box so you do not also need XBMC up on the TV.

That link says MX2, the box has "MX" stamped on it.... But has the 4 vents.

Easy, a clone MX box .. I would not buy it - 4 straight lines of ventilation slots on the bottom for the MX 2 and 2 lines for a MX box, this has neither. Nor does it have the proper MX 2 remote.
