Default Make a printer wireless ?

Okay, I know there are printers that can be connected to via wireless, but what I am interested in knowing, is there a device that you can connect to a printer that makes it print via wireless?

    Printer + ????? > Laptop

I have a problem where my wife who works on the laptop has to save whatever she needs onto a thumb drive then take it the other end of the house to download onto the desktop which is connected to the laser printer.

    Your advice is greatly appreciated.

a wireless print server may do what you want
but you will need to check if your printer is compatiable

would only work if the printer was a network printer and had a ethernet port

you can buy special wireless printer servers or even a normal usb printer server and connect a access point to it.

Or you can connect the printer to your pc on the same network as the laptop and share the printer using windows printer sharing. This requires the PC to be on whenever other computers on the network need to print though. So maybe even a cheap pentium1/2 computer can act as a print server.

I thought he may of had a hp 4000 series laser printer with a hp jet direct port. How silly of me to assume. Obviously there was not enough information provided to give a precise answer and I provided one option.

This may sound silly but ive got 1 laptop and 2 pc's all connecting on line wireless through a network.
We all just connect to the pc with the printer to print.
Maybe a wireless card on your main pc and get a network going?

Your a funny man Best4Less, but I didn't have something that drastic in mind.

Hey guys, can I bounce this off you and tell me if this work.
I am using a WRT54GL wireless router with 4 port switch, if I were to connect the printer into the switch via ethernet cable, would I be able to print to it via the laptop? If so how do I go about it?

    Printer > Router> via wireless > Laptop?

I can't remember how to configure an ip on a lexmark printer but you need to give it an ip address on your network and subnet mask. Then plug the printer into your router. Make sure you can ping it from your laptop. Add the printer to your laptop. Set it up as a local printer creating a new standard tcpip port.
I don't know how your networking skills are so give this a go and report back.

The way I have it set up at home is simple. My Wife's machine is a desktop running XP, printer connected to her machine with File and Printer sharing enabled.

Go to START > Control Panel > Network Wizard setup up a home network, enable File & Printer Sharing.

Now, go to your wife's laptop run the same network setup.

Then go to START > Control Panel > Printers > Add new printer. It should ask whether or not it is LOCAL or on a Network. Click "Printer is on a network" and let it find it for you automatically or type it in manually..

    For eg. \\<desktop pc name>\<printer #>

Works a treat for me as I have 5 PC's on my home network. 4 Wired & 1 Laptop wireless. All access the printer as I have mentioned above no problem.
