Try switching between active and passive transfer modes in the ftp client. I dont remember which one was supported and which one wasnt anymore.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

depends on the network card, and router speeds in your network setup. Most modern computers these days should at max out @ 100mb, provided that copying the files is the only task you are performing on the network. Ie running your broadband etc can slow your network down.

I do find that 100s of small files does take longer to copy than a few large files of the same size over the network.
