I've just attempted to place an add in BST and got this error.

Bugger, now it seems I cant include a picture in the usual manner - I can only link to a URL.

Ohhh well, the error was "austec.info is not responding due to a long-running script." somehow I get the impression this is an error at my end more than it is yours

The add has gone through and is placed in the correct thread however I had no indication at the time and the screen just locked, I had to Alt/F4 and re login to the site.

In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

The lag IMO isnt fully a server related issue, I run 2 boards running this latest vBulletin software, and find the software very server intensive?? Do you Andrew? I found the best smoothest version of VB to be 3.5.2 ran it for a good couple years without any issues or server down time, but this new software, yea well its bloody hungry, and to run it super smoothly requires a minimum 16gig as ive upgraded a board recently, and its bloody hard on the hip pocket, but good strong membership makes the world of difference and its heartening when forum members gladly pitch in to help out.

We run VBulletin version 4 which has been out for 5 years now, V5 is the latest version which has been out for 18 months and I have no intention of upgrading to it. Version 3 is just too old now from many different perspectives.

No, I dont find it (V4) server intensive but then it depends on what how big a site you are trying to run on how small a server with how much traffic. 16 gig of ram is enormous and is not something any average sized site should need and would basically be a waste of money for most forums because if you had a site that was that large and busy that it even required something like that, you would split the site on to 2 servers much cheaper - one acts as the web server and the other runs as the database server.

We have more ram under our current (5 gig) than we had under our last dedicated server which ran faultlessly with 4 gig. We were only just starting to max out 3 gig until we added another 2 last week as I thought it would be safer to 2 gig rather than 1.

We have never had CPU use over 2 that I have seen in recent years, either on this VPS or the last dedicated Quattro or even the one before that. As an example, we are currently running server load of 1.31 on 4 CPU's (cores) and using 53% of Ram. As we are fully managed, our host is responsible for finding the problem and fixing it, management also extends to our installed software including VBulletin. Much better than the old days of having to deal with the stress myself, believe me

It all comes down to money. A dedicated server is the best option, but why pay a couple of hundred a month when you only use 10% of it ? is a much better option for a lot of sites these days because its basically the same as a dedicated server with high specs and you arent sharing resources with others as you are allocated your own hardware resources.

admin, I realize you said you will get the host to fix this issue but do you have AJAX Features enabled under General Features?
Try General Options -> Disable Problematic AJAX Features.
According to some it fixes this problem.

Yes, AJAX is enabled as several modifications use it. Its always been turned on and hasnt been turned on/off in years.

I will look at using it if the problem cant be solved, but am interested as to what the actual cause is as it has only started happening recently and we havent upgraded anything in regards to VBulletin or any modifications. Thanks for the info.

We dont seem to have had a double post today since they did some work yesterday so will see what happens.

    Sorry, forgot to mention
I had the usual option of "Leave this page" as I posted the above so I don't think it is fixed yet

Is there any link backs to sites like google, facebook, twitter, youtube ect? I assume you have server access Andrew? I experienced a similar problem and it turned out an embedded source from a member had created a virus, ran virus scanner in the control panel and sure enough found 2 removed it and everything went back to normal, and yes this virus did cause severe latency

Just had the stay or leave page warning on a medium size post.

luckily when I selected leave it actually posted; as previously that is a lottery.

I'll go back to copying to clipboard before I post until it gets better.

I will say though; the forum has been running quicker over the last few days.

no doubt with the ram upgrade apache would have been rebooted, its only a suggestion log out of austech and clear all your cache and cookies for austech and log back in, just for the record I did, and dont have any above related issues

I think this may be a new record for (unintentional) multiple posts.

    Eight of them .

I have found my Double Posts have dropped, but Austech is Slow to load or just doesn't load at all.
I'd get this 10 to 15 times at day!

The next biggest issue is when posting, takes forever to talk to the server and add your post, sometimes it just times out, meaning you have to "Copy" a lot of your posts so you don't lose them if it times out.... This is getting worse.

I'm guessing some of the issues we are currently experiencing are due to work being done on the server, as it's painfully slow, particularly when posting.

Yep, we are aware of it. We seem to have something happening thats really boosted our server load, what we dont know at this stage. I have just rebooted the server but it hasnt made any difference.
