Default Simulcasting on Gold Coast up and running

Hi Guys, Today the 8 new DTV transmitters installed at the Tamborine Mountain site were fired up for Simulcasting. The Simulcast period is to last 3 months and allow for High Rise buildings to get their act together and supply new head end equipment and cabling before the final restack takes place October 28th. This should be a fun time for installers - roll on Christmas !

    Cheers

So what does this mean for the local punter and his FTA, anything new ??

    Cheers

This is the same as all other areas which have either completed, or are pending the restack of all FTA TV channels into a block of adjacent channels to free up spectrum.

Most viewers in the area should already be using a Band 5 antenna, so all that is required will be to re-tune your TV to the new frequencies.

Some TV signal distribution systems used in large buildings, like hospitals, apartment complexes, hotels, etc, use individual amplifiers for each TV channel.

Depending on the ability of this equipment, some can be re-tuned to the new frequencies, but some signal amps which are fixed to a single frequency, will need to be replaced.

During the interim simulcast period, both the existing channel frequencies and the new channel frequencies will be transmitting and you will be able to tune/watch either until October 28 2014, when the existing transmitters will be turned off and only the new channel frequencies will continue to be transmitted.

After October 28 2014, anyone who hasn't re-tuned their TV/PVR etc to the new channel frequencies and/or replaced/upgraded single channel amplifiers in distribution systems, will lose all FTA reception.

    What does it mean :
It will mean a lot to joe public in the mush zone of the Hinterland. They will now be able to get clean qual sigs without corruption into the stream from the other sites in the SFN. The ABC sig has been particularly poor due to a lower power transmitter being used at the Tamborine site. The powers to be have known of this problem for 12 years and done nothing about it till now.
An SFN over such a large area with three triangulated sites was dumb from the start. Currumbin Hill elev 70 meters; Tamborine Mt 600 meters & Springbrook 1100 meters (which gets into everything!).

'Ron the remote' advertising has started for the Gold Coast with schedule time of 5am on October 28th for retune. This will be an interesting day for us installers, expect to be run off of our feet. The existing transmitters on Tamborine Mt are to be replaced with the new ones which have been operating in simulcast, on temporary radiators hanging to the side of the main radiators, since early August. No Simulcast has been taking place from Currumbin Hill or Springbrook.

Hallelujah brother no more MUSH ZONE now that Tamborine has disconnected from the SFN. The ABC signal will now be clear of corruption.
