    Default ADSL1 speeds & downloads

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can me an idea on broadband download speeds, in the sense that I can only get ADSL1 through my exchange.

the speeds plans that i'm looking at will be either 512 or 1500 as this speed is all I can afford ATM, when i finally changeover i would like to download a few tv episodes and maybe 1 or 2 movies.

is anyone able to give me an idea how long it would take to download say an average size 4gig movie at these speeds? or would it not be worth the effort?

If you get 1500 your download will be about one tenth of your plan .
    ie 1500 = 150kb/sec
    512 = 50kb/sec
To download a movie, use xvid avis.....about 700mb for most movies then convert to a dvd with convertxtodvd. Even 700mb will take a couple of hours on 1500 and a whole lot longer on 512

512 is pretty slow compared to 1500.

Having said that , 8000 makes them both look slow

i would go the 1500 if you can 512 would be very painfull even 1500 is now for me after enjoying 8000.

you will get about 80% of the max

its worked out at 8 bits to a byte so there for divide the max speed they mention by 8 and it will give you the maximum throughput

1500 / 8 = 187.5 max therefore you will get about 150-160 max down and about

    256 / 8 = 32 max therefore you will get about 25-27 upload

this is what i enjoy with 8000 but i cant wait for adsl2

thansk guys for the info...I'm on a tight budget, so I gather from the replies the obvious choice is 1500, i would like to get the fastest adsl1, but the budget just won't allow it......

    cheers

I just changed to the tpg 1500 speed from westnet 256.

You'll be pleased when you go there.

We cannot go adsl2 either.....we are outside metro, so don't exist in the new technology world.

Hi viewer...been carefully looking at this, "the force seems strong in this one"

I've nailed it down to about 4 or 5 providers atm including tpg, would dearly love to stay with my current dialup provider but they can't/won't offer what I'm looking for or match the prices and downloads that the five I have in mind offer....

btw viewer, if yuou've downloaded any large files recently are you able to give me an idea how long the downloaq took
