just a random question..
if they do make a ps3 chip, will it need to have a region free function to be legal to chip here?
aren't all ps3 games region free?
just wondering.

If they do make a chip, it will be illegal because its only aim is to break copy protection.
I have a funny feeling this is why ps3 games are region free, in an effort to make prosecutions eaiser if a chip appears. I also think this might be one of the reasons we havent seen a chip yet too.
Could they make a chip that allows you to play all region BDs then?
Would that be legal?
If it just unlocks the BD regions then it should be legal, but if it breaks any protections they have on the games it would be illegal.
there is a chip, cant remember the name of the guys in europe, but all it can do is back date your firmware.
the only thing that the ps3 needs is a region free blu-ray player. the games are already region free.
thats the one. infectus.
If a ps3 modchip MUST break the copy protection to achieve region free blue ray, then it will still be legal.
But if you can hack the blue ray region restrictions without breaking...then illegal.

I hope you guys realise that the region free argument is not a valid one. Its really a rumor and until they decided to test the new laws which came into effect with the AUS/US FTA agreement back in 2005, we will not know where we stand completely. The loop hole which they used in the sony court case was that the chip didnt allow the copying of disks, which is true, but now the laws are worded differently, I think the case would turn out very differently.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

OzModChips if it breaks copy protection schemes rather than just unlocking the region then it would be illegal. This was the case before the FTA and especially after the FTA (the wording was increased). As for the sony court case, what was stated in that case still applies, region unlocking without breaking copy protection (region locks are NOT copy protection as was stated in parliament) as long as you are not using copyrighted code (ala Sony's code).
This is a little off topic, but I thought still relevant.
We got word around late Nov that they had managed to get backups booting on PS3, and the method was a drive patching mod similar to the Wii and 360.
We expected their to be some news out and about on it now, but maybe its still only in the dev scene.

Whatever, blue ray burner 500 bux, media 20 bux, be better off to buy the games ffs.
Still I guess the burners and media will come down over time. Hopefully a full blown hack will be found by then.
Must admit I don't like DVD hacks. The 360 is not so bad because of the homebrew work in progress and the DVD hack is along the path.
Would hate to be the one they test the new FTA agreements on, BUT I did read somewhere that so long as region protection is still being employed (aka agree thats why Sony aren't region protecting games) that the ACCC will still support modchiping.
Moreover I would like the law to understand what both Sony and Microsoft REAL motivation is here, and that is to monopolize the home gateway market, its got nothing to do with protection of game developers I/P, that is just a farce. Sony could have stopped modchips for PS2 years ago, but they didn't because it would have been a marketing disaster.
The media cost will come down for sure, by the time chips land blue ray will be $10 tops, if not less.

ive been reading that most blu-ray movies coming out now are region free anyways.
theres a website with a full list of what is region free, but of course i didnt save it. ill try to find it again.
