Perhaps mine is louder than most.

I have read a lot of threads... Some have reported loud fan noise. Depends where your personal threshold is i guess.
I am fussy, but more so, my 12 year old SIM2 projector was quitter with less heat and less light leakage all over the place.
The BenQ lights up the ceiling and its mounted 27cm away from it... my old PJ never did that.

Don't get me wrong, i am happy with it.... But i don't believe it is as good as people say it is.... or that it could be.
No doubt PQ is great when its feed a 1080p material.

An increasingly common trend is having the best of both worlds, in common viewing areas. The technology is becoming affordable enough where it's justifiable to do so.

You'd have an everyday pedestrian 4K or 1080p 55" Samsung (or the like) for the wife and kids to bang around on with massive 130"+ screen installed to bulkhead or hide-away box just in front of screen. Most decent (non eBay Chinese) $2K+ screens will have triggers so that when you turn on the projector, the screen will power on (and retract in front of everyday LED).

LED TV's are ridiculously slim in 2014.. a very common model Samsung (UN55C7000) 55" 3D 1080p LED TV etc is just 26mm in depth. Couple that, with a 19mm ultra slim TV bracket () and you're looking at a total distance from wall of only 45mm. Set your projector screen drop at say 65mm (from wall) and happy days.

There are obvious pros and cons to having a dedicated home theatre room (and you'll never talk a hardcore theatre room dude going Atmos etc. into a common-area hybrid solution) but for the every day tinkerers or those strapped for space (or persons with rooms collecting dust) this can be a great solution.

The other benefit as I see it, the primary benefit rather, is not having to double-up on your audio component. IMO the audio investment should be 5x that of visual eg you invest in a $900 Benq 1070 projector and the soundstage should be $4500. Most folks that I've met get it backward. You go into some bogans house and he can't wait to show you his $4500 TV fitted with a $900 soundbar or worse! Don't get me started on the sound quality of onboard LED TV's and persons who think this is passable. No brainer, here.

As far as the Benq 1070/1080ST/1085ST range, great bang for buck. It's an excellent purchase in the budget range. Check this in relation to dbs coming from fan. I have heard the fans can be hit or miss on the 1070. If it were me, I'd open it up and install an after-market ultra silent fan tho specs (from memory) put that stock fan at low 30's (db) from memory which is practically negligible.

    This does support your issue:

Again, I'd just open it up and retro fit with a better fan - possibly better intake filters if such exist on that model.

    Great Post!
Yeah my fan produces a consistent smooth noise, i just think its a bit loud.
A larger but lower rpm fan would be a better solution, but, judging by the heat being pushed out of this little plastic box, there is good reason for a fast fan.

Not only is your Combo Room idea a great one, i have 2 rooms where i've spent a fortune of Audio gear, and worse, when it needs upgrading because of newer formats, DD HD and DTS MA, you have to upgrade two rooms!!!!

Things that have disappointed me with the newer BenQ W1070 over my 12 years old SIM2 is the optical adjustments.
With the SIM2, you could adjust everything via the remote (electrically) and with precision.
The W1070 is a real toy when it comes to setting up the screen size and fine adjustments.
I really hate the focus ring.... But, once set up, it should be set and forget.

I will ask, as a few has this unit.... What 3D glasses did you get?

The OEM BenQ 3D glasses are $150ea or there abouts
I see there are a lot of 144hz DLP 3D glasses out there.... i have looked at 3 brands, but people still say the OEM ones work best

People say these are ok, but as good as BenQ:

    BenQ W1070 for $689

Cheap for a good 1080p projector.

Its noisy, worse by 40% than the 12 years old projector it replaced! Great to see technology has improved and they can't build a silent fan yet!
Its a good projector for the money, but if you are fussy, keep on looking, this unit will drive you mad.
Make sure you run the projector in eco mode that silences the fan heaps and the globe life doubles.

From reading all this, it sounds like a big TV is the way to go.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
