Im generally clocking 1000-1200Km per week, some days close to 300Km.

When EV's can do closer to 300Km between charges ill certainly seriously consider one as my business run around if the price is right.

Next time round i might even look at a prius to do deliveries with, it would just be a matter of stiffening up the rear springs or fit airbags to carry more load.

With all the technology coming together we will soon be using an app on our phones to order a car that will arrive on time take us to our destination and then drive off by itself until we need it again. Car ownership will be a thing of the past . Car dealerships are already planning to become car hire or uber outlets of the future.

If I had the money I'd have one. I don't drive far or often. They suit my driving style perfectly. I'd even get one of those ugly Nissan Leaf cars. Just the thing for me. But no, I'm poor so I'll be driving the cheapest IC bomb that can barely manage a roadworthy. At least my bomb looks good.

Sadly, until a car can do a range of around 300 - 500 ks between charges, and can maintain highway speeds for much of that time, it will be useless to me.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Good 'time capsule' thread this ~ started 8 years ago now, plenty of posts positing the new EV future....and?...

....here we are 8 years later, little has changed and everyone's complaining about the price of petrol =)

Some one has to get lucky eventually with a battery formula that will be cheap, reliable and able to do trips between major Australian cities with out a recharge (1000km)
Statically 77% of Australians do not venture out side of their city (70% in the States) and they travel no further than 37km's per day, so in theory the masses as the majority of people live in cities only need charge once every 8 days based on a 350 km range

I liken the electric car to computer development
Remember up dating your computer to the latest CPU, etc,etc to squeeze the most performance out of it, the posts on this site giving hints etc. Computers now have reached the stage where their performance meets the majorities expectation and there is virtually no posts on computers any more, incremental changes to batteries will do the same
ps, no i am not trading in my diesel Ranger

I am so borrrrrring average with 36km per day

If I need more I just hop in a REX for $140, sometimes $99 and I am in Sydney in an hour ten minutes. Being such a small plane dis/embarking is quite quick.
The juice for a wheeled petrol guzzler to Sydney would be $140 these days anyhow.

REX wants to trial Electric planes relatively soon too

If Australia ran on youtube clips and was defended by government defence announcements, we'd be in a great state.....

    Aaaah, but it's not....

myself and most people i know must be in the other 23%, i do about 100k a day for work only. My daughter and partner
both do about 150 a day each and the others do about 200 a day and that is just driving to and from work no weekend
running around etc included in those numbers.

though the wife is actually doing some real world testing for a bus company up here that she works for with their new
electric mini bus's which will be used as airport shuttles and she said they get about 250-300km a day.

Not quite there yet for most people, a combination of price and not enough range.
I suspect hydrogen/fuel cell vehicles will be the next big thing until electric vehicles are practical.

-Any- EV has enough range for me ~ I'll venture a guess many pensioners are in the same boat.

-All- EV vehicles are beyond my ability to afford, it is that simple (even in the fledgling 2ndhand EV market)

If the point of all this is to reduce CO2 emissions, then how much does it matter that AU's CO2 emissions would drop by a piffling 8% if all passenger vehicles in the country turned into EVs overnight...

...I mean, geezuz....practically speaking, m'kay....I can halve my own vehicle CO2 emissions by getting rid of my 80's 3litre i6, and buying a 20years younger 2litre i4....(and on top of that, roughly halve the amount of petrol I'd need to buy)...

I can do that, for less that 3grand....what's the cheapest EV one can buy?

It just doesn't add up (for me =)
