I recently got two DVD's full of small files and to save some time I decided to quickly copy them on the HDD for processing.
Needless to say it failed and Windows complained the disc can't be read.
Tried a few filemanger that work better than Windows but still a lot of files that seemed lost.
Making an image of the disc failed as well as even Alcohol120% gave up after an hour.
That was when I remembered the good Roadkil - yes single "L"
not only got all the files but so fast that I though the bad ones had been ignored.
A quick check showed all files accounted for
I have no clue why Windows fails so badly while this little program seemed to have no propblem at all but it is worth a try if your old dics refuse to reveal their data....

Absolutely, could have been something like a fingerprint on the surface or, worse still, a scratch. I've not needed unstoppable copier for some time, but it is the bees......well you know!
this stuff always reminds me of the old bill gates v gm story

If Windows can mount a CD, but not read the data on it, then you can try as follows:
Always take olive oil. With a lint-free cloth rub the oil in, then wipe the CD. It looks as new.
In most cases it's enough effort to read the data.
Made best experiences with this method.
The olive oil trick sounds like it might be good, but, and a big but, here, the oil must needs be thoroughly cleaned off the disk before going anywhere near the optical drive or you might end up with a drive that also needs replacing. Oil and dirt do have an affinity for one another.
