i believe it has a benq drive (do the new lite-on/benq drives look identical when you eject the tray?)

Except if you have the new lite on drive you can't flash it and probably never will be able to
cheers, i dont actually have the box with me but he sent me a pic of the ejected dvd drive which looks like the benq. thats why i was asking if the liteon look the same
should be right to go
thanks
what is the date code of the box?, March 2008 is suspect, April and you probably have the liteon.

Have a look here.
As you can see the old flashabe Banq/Philips looks identical to the newer unflashable Benq/Lite-on when tray is opened.
So you will have to go by the manufacture date.
March 2008: Older flashable drive
Mid April 2008: Nerwer unflashable
Running the following flashed Philips/Benq drive works perferct:
Benq: Iexteme 1.41 @ 8x
Burn @4x using ridata dvd+r DL.
I thought the Ridata's were 2.4x max, unless you force it to 4x? Anyway, Verbatim +DL at 2.4x ,bit slower but cant go wrong

For one I said probably :P
and 2, the chipset is fundamentally different in that the flash is embedded, and if you believe the patent info and if it applies to this chip then we are basically screwed.
The hitachi 79 was able to be done for AGES before the pass key by pulling the EEPROM off the board and reading it...bit hard to do that when its embedded
But I DID say probably :P
