Default AV Cables - Which Are Better ?

Is this list correct ? Trying to determine which cables are better. The list below is Best to Worst ... Please correct if its incorrect or if a cable is missing:

    1. HDMI / DVI
    2. Component
    3. SCART
    4. S-Video
    5. RCA

I have been trying to find a web site that explains this, but goggling just takes you to AV cable suppliers. Any help appreciated.

Your list is more or less on the money Troy.

Scart is really just the plug/socket type (the video format is still just RGB, Composite, S/video or YrYbCr etc)

You just need to understand the limits of each options and you have it

(funny thing is a HDMI or DVI cable is just 2 Cat5e cables with fancy plug tops and a fat outer coating) They should be priced accordingly, but they are not.

So what I'm trying to determine is will I get a better picture using a SCART to Composite cable compared to SCART to RCA / S-Video?

I'm wanting to get the best picture quality available from my Foxtel to my LCD.

Yep, 666 is on it Troy, as his link explains to you. Component is the best resolution you can get from an analog cable.
Other issues can come into play though (colour bleeding across bands etc) but as a general rule, Scart to (RGB, Component or YrCrCb etc) is your best answer.

If you want an even better picture, buy a receiver that offer analog to digital conversion and up-scaling. It is a VERY noticable improvement.

Yamaha, Sony and Denon offer these functions. I generally just use Yamaha and have been very happy with the results.
