Default Old Kelvinator split AC dripping water off the inside head

I have an old (16 years... yeah I know) Kelvinator split AC system (KSR25D) that has not missed a beat even though I live by the sea.

Over the last few days I has started dripping water off the internal head big time when on cool.

Is there any easy fix or is it terminal?

    Blocked Drain
Low on Gas (which will often freeze the evap and spit water out the vents)

To expand on that the drain pipe becomes blocked with dust, mould etc over time. Can often be easily cleaned.

I had that happen on a 5 year old system and found it was the drip tray in the bottom of the head unit had never been properly clipped in. It must have been that we had very hot humid weather at the time, combined with a buildup of dust where the drain hose connected to the tray.

Turned on the unit last night to checked drain. Stuck a thin pvc pie up drain found no blockage.

Then realized the outside unit was not running (no fan)

Bonnet up and reseated all connections - now all working OK.

Sometime ago I was pricing a split unit and we were talking of where to instal it and the dealer mentioned an additional cost of $100 for a 'pump' as the Head end would be mounted outside as usual but the inner unit would be possibly 2 meters from the entry point on a shared wall and the hoses would need to be horizontal between the entry and the inner unit.
When I asked for details, it seems this pump takes away the water collected in this drain tray you have mentioned in this posting.

I said to save a $100 they could run this drain pipe down the wall and out under the house for all I cared.

That was 4 years ago and I am still waiting for them to come and give me an onsite quote..........

Drain pumps have been around for a long time, and should be avoided at all costs IMO.
Have been to too many jobs where they have failed.
Not great when they are in the wall cavity

Don't know about another 16 years cause I forgot to mention that when the top came off there was no bottom left in the unit!

If you mean its rusted out, that will only pose a problem if its part of the structure and not just a cover plate.
You know how its set up so I would look at that first and if its needed, simple bracing strips might do the job, other than that, just make sure that nothing can gain ingress under the unit to interfere with its operation.

If its accessible where the 'bottom' has gone from, perhaps you could paint any bare metal with a rust proofing and give it a few more years.

    Nothing left to paint Gordon.
I did have to insert a strategic piece of timber to hold the fan bracket in place.
    Think I'm on borrowed time.

That might also be the cause of the water inside to Fitzy!
Outdoor unit cant suck air through the coil efficiently anymore, hence, the indoor unit cant transfer the heat.... Product of this is you will get water build up and eventually ice build up. Similar to if it were low on gas.

I'd say you've got ya monies worth out of it
