Default What is you Fridge Cabinet Temperature?

Something we probably completely forget about...
I bought a great little Stainless Steel Thermostat from ALDI on the weekend for less then $4
Bought it to use in a Waeco portable fridge to help with calibration, but thought i drop it in the fridges around the house first.

Temps taken from top shelf of Fridge Cabinet.

    Kitchen Fridge: 3.5 degrees C (Freezer -19 degrees C)
Drinks Fridge in Garage: -4 Degrees C

    Quote from NSW Health Dept:
The optimum temperature for home fridges is between 0oC and 5oC.

Maintaining the optimum temperature inside a fridge is important to minimise the growth of bacteria that can cause food poisoning and spoilage:

too warm and food poisoning bugs can start to grow, and
too cold and foods can freeze, which will damage some foods.

And of course this fluctuates every time you open the door and how long it stays open, throw in a stinking hot day and the temperature of any recently added items soon would change the readings.

When you think about it and poor fridge hygiene, its a wonder we dont have more cases of food poisoning than we do.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Thats actually a brilliant point gordon, a friend of mine wrote a piece in a magazine about the biggest hidden danger in our own homes, it was the stuff in the Fridges!
I know i've gotten sick heaps of times from meats stored in fridges, but its my own fault, i do push it sometimes and will cook something that should most likely be thrown out. Thats more from too many days unfrozen than the fridge itself though.

As you say, the environment helps a lot, the fridge in the garage has a concrete floor, brick walls and no windows, its already cold and dark in there.
The fridge doesn't have to work much, in fact, i have never heard that fridge running, yet the cabinet temp is -4 degrees.

We have a "smart" fridge that displays cabin temp at 4 and freezer -13.

I"d be worried about putting glass beer bottles in there; borderline on freezing the beer & breaking the bottles.

The Fishead and Piklets upright came with factory settings of 4c and -13c, which are fine by me so there it stayed.

3deg and -19 for the house fridge and freezer, 0deg for the beer fridge in the shed, -2 for the keg fridge under the bar (also a modified chest freezer) Actually I tried to go lower with the keg fridge, but the bloody beer lines freeze up :-(
