    Default Micckeysoft: interesting "facts"

    Just for those who have nothing to do

    MAGIC #1
    Found that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the Computer which can be named as "CON". This is something funny and inexplicable? At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened! TRY IT NOW, IT WILL NOT CREATE A "CON" FOLDER

    MAGIC #2
    For those of you using Windows, do the following:
    1.) Open an empty notepad file
    2.) Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
    3.) Save it as whatever you want.
    4.) Close it, and re-open it.
    Noticed the weird bug? No one can explain!

    MAGIC #3
    Again this is something funny and can't be explained?
    At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened!
    It was discovered by a Brazilian. Try it out yourself?
    Open Microsoft Word and type
    =rand (200, 99)
    And then press ENTER And see the magic?..!

    Magic #4
    Did you know that a flight number from one of the planes that hit one of the two WTC towers on 9/11 was Q33N. In Notepad / WordPad or MS Word, type that flight number i.e Q33N. Increase the font size to 72. Change the font to Wingdings. ..... u will be amazed by the findings!!!

    And the explanation

    1 “CON” and a number of other character strings are in fact reserved names that go back to the days of DOS and cannot be used to name folders or files.

    2 If the file is originally saved as “Unicode” rather than “ANSI” the text displays correctly.

    3 is a coding test known as a pangram.

    4 Hoaxslayer have looked into this one in depth.

    1 "CON" and a number of other character strings are in fact reserved names that go back to the days of DOS and cannot be used to name folders or files.

    Of course people at Microsoft knows the reason why! But obviously not the author of the article you cited.

    Any folder with names such as "con", "prn", "nul", "com1", "com2", "lpt1" etc. can be created. Two simple methods to do so:

    1. Using the Command Prompt:

      Here is a step-by-step procedure to create the "con" folder using the command prompt:

      Go to the command prompt:

      Type in the command prompt (For ex. To create a folder in the E: drive by name: "CON")

      C:\>md \\.\e:\con

      NOTE: "con" can be replaced by any other names such as "prn", "nul", "com1", "com2", "lpt1" etc.

      In case if you wish to delete the folder, use the following command:

      C:\>rd \\.\e:\con

      NOTE: This folder can only be deleted from the command prompt. You cannot remove it by right-click delete.

    2. Using ALT Key and Numeric Keypad:

      You can also use the Alt key and the Numeric keypad to accomplish the same job in a much easier way. Here is how you can do it:

      Create a New folder (Right-click -> New -> Folder)

      Once the new folder is created, right-click on it and select the option "Rename".

      Hold down the ALT key and type 0160 from the numeric keypad (ALT+0160) and release the ALT key.

      Now, the folder name should go blank so that you can type any name of your choice such as "prn", "nul", "com1", "com2", "lpt1", "nul" etc. and press Enter.

      NOTE: This folder can easily be deleted: just by right-click and "Delete".

    That’s it, you’re done!

    BTW: The easier method #2 works also on a Windows 8.x PC

    What an imbecility: Notepad detects file's ecoding (Unicode and/or ANSI) automatically and opens it correctly. No weird bug(s) to be noticed. Also if you save the created text file for example as "Bush-hid-the-facts.BIN" you can re-open it with Notepad. You even can open any EXE file (which is in binary format) with Notepad.

    BTW: What is an empty "notepad file" ?

    Taken from the internet:

    A file is a collection of data or information that has a name, called the filename. Almost all information stored in a computer must be in a file. There are many different types of files: data files, text files, program files, directory files, and so on. Different types of files store different types of information. For example, program files store programs, whereas text files store text.

    So also you understand it: If you start Notepad.exe then NO file is created. Notepad.exe simply provides in RAM a buffer (65,535 bytes) , where the text input - via keyboard or opened text file - temporarily is stored.

    FYI: That's the very rudimentary 'main' code for any text editor - without loading a text file first, of course; example is in 'C' language
    Code:
        m_buffer="";
        while(1)
        {
    	    a = fgetc(input_stream);

        	    // Note:
                // save / save as puts EOF character to input_stream

    	    if (a == EOF) break;

    	    m_buffer += (char) a;
        }
        fputs(m_buffer, output_file);
        fclose(output_file);
    A file in Notepad only will be created in the moment you select Save / Save As. In this moment Notepad writes contents of its internal RAM buffer to disk, into a file that contains textual data (shorthand: text file). IIRC more than 100 file extensions for 'text files' are in use, not only .TXT, which is Notepad's default setting.

    Resume: Speaking of a "Notepad file" is absolut nonsense.

    We should always strive to formulate everything correctly: facilitates the life immensely.

    I was going to comment but felt if I used phrases such as anal retentive, the association game would just fall on deaf ears.
    Miereneuker covers it perfectly
    In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
    The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

    An old suffer, I know. It is due to the fact that I have taught over years young people in computer basics, also in programming. All have learned to express themselves correctly.

    The time has come then for you to practise what you preach and learn to enunciate correctly in English.

    Then you thought incorrectly Phil,
    I used the word as a verb not as a noun
    In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".

    Yes, the explanation for that 'mystery' was given in 2007 , where the whole contents of post #1 obviously was derived from.

    Some additional words:

    The feature already was introduced with Word 97 for Windows - 17 years ago!
    But perhaps only "professional" Word users know of this feature and make use of it ...

    Since Word 2007 three methods are available to create a "pangram":

    =rand()
    =lorem()
    =rand.old()

    In Word 2003, Word 2002, Word 2000, or in Word 97 for Windows, only

    =rand()

    is available

    Note: The feature won’t work if you’ve disabled the AutoCorrect 'Replace text as you type' option (under File Options Proofing Autocorrect Options).

    In '88 I had a client with a small Netware network. The office manager insisted that his computer was broken. "It keeps putting rubbish all over the screen". Turns out he had a client named 'Con' (see where this is going?) and he was trying to save a document as 'con.doc' which spewed the file all over the screen.

    Correct, by default MS-DOS device driver names cannot be used as file names. Reason is that Microsoft MS-DOS reserves certain names for system device drivers:

    CON Keyboard and display
    PRN System list device, usually a parallel port
    AUX Auxiliary device, usually a serial port
    CLOCK$ System real-time clock
    NUL Bit-bucket device
    A:-Z: Drive letters
    COM1 First serial communications port
    LPT1 First parallel printer port
    LPT2 Second parallel printer port
    LPT3 Third parallel printer port
    COM2 Second serial communications port
    COM3 Third serial communications port
    COM4 Fourth serial communications port

    If you try to name a file using one of these names, you always will receive the following error message:

    Write Fault Error Writing Device <FILENAME.EXT>
    Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?
