I had lots of "fun" with the "upgrade" on a laptop. Usually dual boot win 8.1 with linux.
Upgrade took over 2 hours to download and install.
It did keep my desktop and programs.... but after installing dual boot obviously it didn't like it and went into a loop several times before it loaded.
Solution was to wipe hard drive and do a clean install from iso.... working ok but deleting or disabling unwanted default apps/services is time consuming.
and I will not use cloud storage.

    Edit extra info:
    Found this useful
Plus sped things up by running ccleaner and deleted all windows.old
W10 working well now and using Firefox and usual addons

Wishy77, is that still dual boot or only Win10 now?

No is now only W10 for test purposes
Another hint is install another av unless you prefer Windows Defender...(I disabled but it comes back) so I installed Avast freebie and apparently Win Defender then does not operate

I ended up getting it sorted, rolled back to Win 7 and had a look around and found the driver, back to Win 10 and it still wouldn't install, 3 attempts later it came good after a reboot, was a bit of mucking around but got there in the end

    FYI:

On Microsoft's page concerning "MediaCreationTool for Windows 10", the quoted link leads to, you can read

Again: Nothing on this page is said about possibility you can use this tool also to perform an upgrade. Point.

    BTW:

    The screen

you only get shown if you bypass Microsoft's Get Windows 10 app ( KB3035583 ) - referred to worldwide as the "Windows 10 Free Upgrade" -

and instead use "MediaCreationTool for Windows 10" to download Windows 10 and upgrade from a Windows 7 & 8 edition to its Windows 10 equivalent.

Err. You can use media creation tool to upgrade windows directly, or create an iso to upgrade windows with, or do a clean install.
You can pick your version of iso, including 32/64 bit in one....
You can also use it to download to a bootable usb stick, which can be used to upgrade or clean install.
either way gives the exact same result as using kb3035583.
in fact it will often be much quicker, as you dont have to wait in the que....

If that's not a free upgrade, don't know what is.......

if you cant see that, you really are thick....

In fact, you yourself stated that KB3035583 downloads a .wim file, which is just an iso in a proprietary microsoft format, which can be converted to a standard iso.
tell me, what is the difference between kb3035583 downloading the file, which requires some user input to upgrade, and manually downloading the exact same file via media creation tool and upgrading ?

I have used classic shell on my computer for Win 8 & 8.1 in Vista mode, my question has any one updated to 10 who has been using classic shell, and how does it compare, or have they re down loaded and installed classic shell?

you dont really need classic shell in w10, the start button is back and its easy to manually configure it to get the classic look back.

Had issues on the Surface Pro 2, after the upgrade i lost all network connections, even plugging in a usb wifi card gave me the same results, in device manager the adaptors were there no problem just network connections had nothing. Had to roll back to win 8.1 and uninstall a citrix vpn client as it wouldn't uninstall from win10, after that re did the upgrade and had my network connections back yay.. Only problem i can see now is a sleep issue with win10, seems as if the sleep mode is not working correctly as it drains the battery hard whilst its in sleep, but im not the only one its happening to so just waiting for an update and all should be good.

Yeah, same with a Dell slab but rather than roll it back I grabbed the wee 2Gb micro SD out of my phone, whacked a copy of the network interface drivers on it, and installed them onto the slab with it. Those micro SD cards are inconveniently small too!

I can't see the need to update atm really
Windows8 is working fine for me
yes, I said the same when I was using XP
but now with all the reports of information gathering/spying etc. I'd go linux before considering W10 (of course there would be some proggies I'd have to do without)
Microshaft can stick W10 up their arse

I had it on 8.1 and updated to 10 with it still on.

I removed it to see what the default is like, its fine in my opinion. I would remove classic shell and have a look, its not hard to put it back.

& miss out on all the driver issues, bugs & patches/fixes fun.

Microsoft & Google have been collecting information for purely consumer usage enhancement reasons spying for years, this is nothing new.

Does the year free start fresh everytime you do a clean install or does it revert to the date it first became available is their an expiry date for all the freebies?

    Pheggie, you only need to Upgrade sometime between now and 29 July 2016 for it to be free on that qualifying machine (and only that machine), as long as it activates, you can then rollback to the previous version of Windows within the first month of upgrajing if you want (Win7, Win8 or Win8.1) and as long as you don't make any "meaningful" change to your hardware you can do a clean install of Win10 (or the upgrade again) at a later date. Her's a link to Microsoft's Win10 FAQ;

    Is the upgrade really free?

Yes, it’s free. This is a full version of Windows, not a trial or introductory version. It is available for a limited time: you have until 29 July 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you’ll have Windows 10 for free on that device.

Can I go back to my previous version of Windows if I don’t like Windows 10?Yes, while we think you will love all the features of Windows 10, you will have one month after upgrading to revert back to the previous version of Windows on your device.

Can I reinstall Windows 10 on my computer after upgrading?
Yes. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer, you will be able to reinstall, including a clean install, on the same device. You won’t need a product key for re-activations on the same hardware. If you make a meaningful change to your hardware, you may need to contact customer support to help with activation. You’ll also be able to create your own installation media like a USB drive or DVD, and use that to upgrade your device or reinstall after you’ve upgraded.
