OSIRUS (03-09-18)
Hi all on the Window thread.
My wife has a 17 inch HP Notebook that has Windows 8 on it and she want to update to Windows 10 so whats the best method to update to the later OS. I'm 50% knowledge for updating but the Wife is totally no good with Computers and software when it come to this. I dont mind paying for the key (if its not to expensive) so tell me guys and gals whats the best way to do it.
Thanks
You will need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 first.
Then Windows 10 will appear in Windows update....
Assuming you are online with the laptop.

Recently upgraded win 7 to win 10 but kept failing.
If this happens on your win 8 upgrade just download the files but disconnect when it wants to download the updates at the end of the win 10 download
It will then upgrade to win 10 and then add the updates required later.
Win 10 usually has most of the drivers off the bat as long as you are just upgrading and not doing a fresh install.
It will usually tell you if any programs or hardware won't work before it installs
You should be able to upgrade if either win 7 or win 8.1 so you should be fine
Don't panic too much about the drivers, yes, they can sometimes be useful, but, in many cases, not critical. Most of my machines were new when W7 was the new kid on the block and all worked w10 happily. In some cases I visited the system mfgs website to see if there were W10 drivers available and installed as needed.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
So lets start again! Sorry guys including any woman, don't want to offend anyone.
Member HOE said do I have Window 8.1...... YES I have Windows 8.1 so what the next step from here.
member mandc said Dont do a fresh install, update only
member Isemmens said Don't panic too much about the drivers,
I order on what to do next
"EG"
1/ Back up everything just in case as the wife dont want to loss her stuff like photo's and other
After this..... do this
2/
3/
4/
A fresh install will wipe all your programs and files so back up if you want to do this. Also, win 10 will ask you to activate it with a new key.
If your current win 8.1 is working ok just upgrade as all files and programs will be kept and it will automatically activate the win 10 (my experience recently anyway)....it even activated my less than kosher 'activated' win 7
If you update, you should still backup for safety (which you should be doing anyway) Also make sure you have a few gigs of free space on your hard drive
2. Download and run Media Creation Tool from microsoft
It will give the option to either make a usb of the win 10 or to upgrade a current computer....obviously hit upgrade
3. It will download all the files necessary then will download updates....these updates caused problems with my install but I would just let it run first time and if the install fails it reverts back to your original win 8.1 so no major harm done.
4. That should be all if it's successful...if not report back
My procedure has always been
Back up EVERYTHING - that means
ensure you have a copy (hard copy even better) of all Passwords, login details and Activation keys/codes for ALL apps and sites that you might never NEED.
backup all relevant data - Email - (often forgotten) Documents, PICTURES, Music videos....blah, blah
Backup the backup (just in case it all goes south)
Ensure current OS is up to date
Perform an in place Upgrade to your new OS.
Ensure that everything is working as it should
I, then, perform a clean install only re-installing those apps that I need. ( this is just me being anal - goes back to my days of dos and keeping the system clean)
Re-load backups and we are good to go
Of course, that's what I used to do. Now that I've installed Linux an update only takes a few seconds (or minutes if you leave it too long, but this is a topic for another day.

im a bit wierd in how i do my upgrades , considering drives are cheap these days i
1: clone my current drive to a spare hd
2: remove current drive and plug in the clone i just made
3: do my upgrade
4: if im happy put my main drive in storage.
5: if im unhappy or things went side ways i remove the drive in install my main one again
nothing lost nothing fked up and all good

It would pay to grab a cheap ssd and maybe more ram, w10 likes 8tb minimum to run nicely.
With a fresh install you will have to pay for w10 I suspect..

I agree with both hoe and fandtm666. both are good suggestions.

Well what a weekend I had. Yes it was easy to uses the tool Media Creation Tool from Microsoft to update from Win 8.1 to Win 10 but what happened when win 10 was about 90% finished I got this message (Kernel-data-inpage) I checked the Memory, I checked the HDD for errors all was good as I replaced the memory and the SSD only a month ago and that stuffed me so I tried it again and again until it was finished yeah!!!! but Window 10 refuses to update the critical updates so what I did I started with a Clean Win 10 Pro edition (before it was home) to stick it on the USB, I think it was ISO purchased a the key for $42 and installed it so all is good now. It took me from start to finish from Saturday to Monday arvo to do this. I need a rest. Anyhow the notebook is good now touch wood.
And You wonder why I use Linux. FWIW I spent today installing windows and linux as a dual boot on my laptop. Surprisingly enough it all went smoothly about 5 hours for windows, updates, firefox, libreoffice, iTunes and musescore and about 2 for Linux mint, updates and musescore. The rest are installed by default. iTunes is the only reason I need windows now.
I'll be glad to get home and install an SSD in this lappy (I inherited it from my son who has upgraded). A mechanical drive is sooooooo sloooooow!
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
cant work out how it takes 5 hours for a windows install ??? when i do a full clean install
takes me about 1.5hrs total including installing all the apps i need for my bussiness.
I only need to do that when its a new comp otherwise i have a cloned clean install disc
with all my programs ready to go in the draw to just throw in in the event one dies.
i also have a usb with all the drivers i need for all my comps ready to go when i need them for a clean windows install.
and dont say linux if i wanted it id install it.

It might have something to do with speed of internet connection. And the fact that I am using a mechanical HDD. I'll do a proper install to an SSD when I get home next month.
