Windows 7 since January 13, 2015 is a dead Windows version. Microsoft hasn't mentioned a Windows 10 "Downgrade" . So I suspect there's no way to "Downgrade" Windows 10 to Windows 7, I rather suspect you need to reinstall your previous Windows 7 from scratch or from a backup, if you don't like the Windows 10 you "Upgraded" to.
You'll need to reinstall your Windows 7 from the recovery or installation media that came with your daughters laptop (typically DVD media). If you don't have recovery media: Before you "Upgrade" to Windows 10, you might be able to create recovery media from a recovery partition on your daughters laptop using software provided by laptop's manufacturer. Check the support section of your daughters laptop manufacturer's website for more info.

I think the 1 year deal is for Win7, 8 & 8.1 users, it means you can update to Win10 for free if you do so in the first year of availability & will not have to pay for the upgrade ever; after the first year of W10 availability if you have not upgraded & wish to do so you will have to pay for the upgrade.
It is not available for XP & Vista users AFAIK.
The offer popped up on my W8.1 this morning, nothing on my Vista Lappy.
EDIT; can anyone out there that has tested W10 tell me if it does the same retro environment job for running old software as W8/8.1 does??

Got email today saying my upgrade will be ready for installation from 29th of July.
tiny, win 10 has run any standard program ive put on it without trouble
as win 7 has no apps feature, theres no notification nor is there in win updates, although it says so, that i can see

Can anyone confirm if I complete the download (when it becomes available) and then install it after the 12 months if I would still be eligible for the free 'upgrade'? Or is it the case W10 will need to be downloaded and installed within 12 months.
Also can someone confirm, would it be possible to run a clean install with the windows10 upgrade. I know this could be done window 7 upgrade... I read it on this forum many moons ago. I'll be interested in this as I am running windows7 32bit and would like to move up to windows10 64bit.

Might well be that Microsoft, as announced at end of July 2015, ships a slightly incomplete Windows 10 version and later on will update/upgrade it via Windows Update. We will see.
If you want to become an unpaid Windows 10 Upgrade tester, then it's on you to find all the show-stopping bugs in the code.

You have to reserve Windows 10 Upgrade via the The "Windows Update KB3035583" program for each computer on which an older Windows OS is running and you want to switch to Windows 10. The "Windows Update KB3035583" program after reservation has completed then prepares the PC with some data via a pre-load down of them to speed up the actual upgrade process ( on July 29, 2015 ).

As the name implies, it's an "Upgrade". So Microsoft will only convert for free an old 32-bit Windows 7 & 8 & 8.1 edition into its new Windows 10 32-bit version, an old 64-bit Windows 7 & 8 & 8.1 edition into its new Windows 10 64-bit version.
To switch from a current 32-bit Windows edition to its Windows 10 64-bit version, you in any case need a 64-bit Windows 10 installation media. Note: Switching a Windows from 32-bit to 64-bit will wipe out all your data and the applications.

The free "Windows 10 Upgrade" gets installed via Windows Update. This default mechanism doesn't allow user to switch to another Windows version before updating the computer to "Windows 10 Upgrade" has finished. Afterwards, of course user at any time can re-install (clean install) either a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10 - no matter then whether it's a retail or OEM version - if they became available.
