Do you have a keyboard with a volume control? Could be a stuck key or whatnot.
I have an issue with sound on my PC that's just happened, and I can't think what I've done to bring it about
I have a soundblaster card as well as the on-board audio (is that the AC97 thing??) on my GeForce mobo. The two have co-existed from day 1 with no problems, with my speakers connected to the PCI card.
Recently, I lost sound to the speakers, and a check of the volume level revealed it set to 'zero'. I pushed it up to maximum, and it made the 'beep' when I released it, and then it started to slide down the scale all on it's own!!! I repeated the process, and it did it again! You can see it here:
Device manager shows no problems with PCI or on-board audio, and if I disable the AC97, I have no sound at all, and if I disable the card, I get audio through the built-in output-but not the card?
There's a conflict somewhere, but I don't know what's introduced it to my system, or how to resolve it. I haven't added any new audio components-it was delivered with this configuration-but I don't know what to do.
For some reason, I haven't been able to restore to an earlier version either-it just fails at each attempt.
Any clues?

looks like your scroll wheel on your mouse is scrolling down. Try another mouse maybe.
BTW nice looking honda.
What happens if I press alt + F4?
Have you annoyed your neighbours recently with loud music?
I am thinking along the lines of stuck button, broken scroll wheel, or even a virus.
I would say it is more likely to be a stuck button.

I'll give that a try (along with the keyboard suggestion-thanks). Problem I have now is I've uninstalled my card AND the on-board sound-so now I have nothing :-(
I hate these PCs when things go wrong! I usually spend all day farting around trying to get them working again, and today's been no different!
thanksBTW nice looking honda.

if you are running xp it should find them and sort things on reboot.

hmm. It tells me nothing :-(
I'm even re-installing Realtek stuff from my motherboard CD, but it still won't find the "Audio Processor driver".
Am I right to avoid any of those online scanners that pop up in all the driver search inquires on google? Or am I just being paranoid that they'll 'do something' to my PC is I run them?
cheers

You should be able to get the drivers from the motherboard web site. Some older realtek drivers had issues with some Xp updates, but that was a few years ago now.
If you wanna try some of those driver search apps look here, but use with care, on my Vista only laptop, that I upgraded to XP they usually pick video drivers that don't work:
or
(you need to add it to the firewall then just run)
DO NOT use the online scanners unless you want your pc infested with malware.

thanks for the link-looks like a good app :-)
It did find an update for me (as well as some others I wasn't aware of), but it's the same file I've been trying to install :-(
I tried it anyway. I booted into safe made, uninstalled my AC97 from the device manager, and installed the file I downloaded. Went smoothly, so I rebooted. I was then asked to locate ksuser.dll and did, but before it finished I got the alert "Cannot load the Realtek AC'97 Audio driver. The driver may be missing. Try installing the driver again", which of course failed the same way :-(
Device manager tells me both the Realtek and Soundblaster are working properly, but I have no sound.
I'm at a loss as to what to do next :-(
thanks for you help guys. ...and that's what I was suspicious of with the online site too rob916 ;-) Rest assured, I haven't done that.

I wonder if there is an irq conflict or a codec screw up?
Try reversing the order of the install... ie on board first and then soundblaster or vice versa. Try disabling the onboard sound in the bios. Or take out the soundblaster, install the on board audio, check that it works, then put in the soundbalster and have it install and see what you get.
Hi,
First go to the BIOS, onboard periphials and DISABLE the onboard sound chip.
Exit and save
Put the creative soundcard back into the PC and reboot.
XP should see the card and prompt for the Driver CD that came with the soundcard.
Hopefully the creative driver will then be installed
Did you by any chance update or install another CODEC pack?
