That's the way we do it now, however I remember when I was a little younger & poorer; cardboard of the close enough thickness (usually a Cornflakes box) would do the job & even now in an emergency situation wouldn't hesitate in using it, with a dash of silicon of course.
Cheers, Tiny

Cornflakes box is what i used as well except with gasket goo (do the still sell it?). Maybe wheet-bix or rice bubbles too. But never coco pops. Too much sugar :P

i have been reading this thread, i have come to the conclusion that I should take up proctology, I will only need o-rings to re-bore my foofer valves
as they have no gaskets.
mango you pineapple, i am trying to do this on the cheap and just wanted to give it a go, i was under the impression there was an o ring on the carby manifold and in the carby. proctology thanks
Yep, cornflakes cardboard does the job with some good non hardening sealant.
Back in the mid 70's my old man seized a VW engine, he replaced the bearings, hand polished the crank and used thin single layer cardboard with gasket goo to get the engine just loose enough to run.
Then he traded it in on a new car, boy was he holding his breath while he drove it there and they test drove it.
