Victorian racing is expected to be broadcast on Channel 78 within days with Racing Victoria set to confirm on Thursday exactly when the Racing Live service will be seen on the digital television station.

Racing Victoria and representatives from Seven West Media have been working closely to get the broadcast up and running since the Victoria Racing Club handed its media rights to RV, allowing the five-year media and broadcast deal to be signed.

The question remains exactly when the first broadcast will be, with a final decision from SWM expected early Thursday before Racing Victoria confirms details.

It would be fitting, given the new channel will be powered by the Racing Live feed on Racing.com, if Racing.com Park is the first venue to be broadcast on 78. The Pakenham Racing Club venue hosts meetings on Thursday and Friday with a possibility of a debut on either day.

Saturday’s metropolitan meeting is Flemington, which hosts David Bourke Provincial Plate Day, while there are also races at Warrnambool.

Racing in Victoria hasn’t been broadcast on television since June 15, when Sky Racing ended its contract to broadcast. Since then the Racing Live broadcast has been seen through Racing.com, while races are also broadcast on Sportsbet and Crownbet’s digital properties.

A new premium racing channel involving a partnership between Seven West Media and Racing.com is expected to start broadcasting on Channel 78 on August 29.

Before then, the Racing Live broadcast will be shown on Channel 78, which will reach all metropolitan markets through one of the Seven network’s available digital channels.

It is believed a solution for regional digital TV, plus a dedicated Foxtel channel, will be worked on in the coming weeks. More information on this is expected from Racing Victoria on Thursday.

pheggie - confirmed, Melbourne has an extra 2 channels.

Channel 77 called "7 Guide", has a blank screen with no sound. TV guide displays "No information".

Channel 78 called "RACING.COM", has a rainbow test screen with a test tone. TV guide displays "Coming Soon".

I would love to see a channel that runs mainly all the early day shows/movies/ The Black and white sporting events "eg" Bathurst 500 to the 1000/ Cricket/NRL/AFL. Last night I noted in the Guide that Ch 7 next week is running a two hour doco (I could be wrong or confused ) about the THREE STOOGES. Last week in prime time they ran a Doco about Cats. Yeah we all enjoyed it after we recorded it and played it back later. Please enough of these Shopping Channels and certinally I don't give a shit about Horses.

    DTV Channel 78 - Racing.com

    Video 576i 16:9 SD MPEG4
    Audio HE-ACC 2.0

This must have really disrupted the betting game through out the country.
What a cluster @#$% for Pubs and Clubs and TAB outlets.

    It sure is... You beauty!

Sure, its not everyones cup of tea, but maybe some should be thankful an Australian Sport just went back to FTA TV!!!
    Instead of the Dark Side.

What is interesting, or sad, is the Picture Quality from Racing.com stream is far better than the Digital FTA offering on a 50" screen.

Just wait until 7 decides it no longer wants to play in this sandpit and they [pubs, clubs et al] have to change it all back again. 7 won't? HAH! Pull the other one.

I think i read it was also going to be part of Foxtel shortly too.
Yes, will be interesting to see what 7 does with Racing.com Ch78.
7 have always had a relationship with horse racing, i'm just not sure where the money is coming from to support this new channel.
It would all stem back to the reason why SKY didn/t renew its contract.

Most of what you are asking Spanked Ham is covered in this article

    And probably the best news.

Is Racing Live stream available internationally on Racing.com?

Yes. The geo-block on viewers outside Australia has been lifted on Racing.com with Sky Racing relinquishing the right to broadcast Victorian thoroughbred racing internationally.
Fantastic news for those Aussie working OS, or even our NZ neighbours.

As this is FTA TV nobody has to change anything apart from rescanning the tuner if the TV set doesnt do it automaticaly unlike that racing network on satellite that closed down a few years ago.
As for SEVEN not continuing with this in the future is a Business decision based on GREED (Avertising) and if the pot comes up less than what was 'Projected', then it will be consigned to the 'Better Luck Next Time' basket.
We all know there is big money in all forms of Sport, even more so when gambling is involved and you can bet (pun intended) all the TV networks are looking at ways and means to grab some of this to boost their 'Bottom Line'.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

I can already tell you, that LIVE Horse Racing on FTA has been very well received by the people i know.
These people don't have Pay TV, nor ever have, so its a whole new audience.
Plus, while they are watching Racing.com, they are NOT watching something else.
Its also the type of programming that you just leave on, all day!
And watch it when your race is up, so it probably has a better long term audience capture than normal FTA viewing with shows of 30min to an hour.

With the amount of Online Betting these days, it seems a brilliant mix!
Although, the footage was available on "some" betting sites already.
If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!
