    Default Help with .UDF file

I'm trying to open and edit a User Database from a satellite meter.

The database is saved as "userdb.udf" from the meter onto USB device - I would like to open it on my PC and change some of the satellite and channel settings, and then load back into the meter. Unfortunately, no editing software came with the meter.

Google tells me that .udf is generally a type of archive file, similar to .iso and the like, and recommended programs are 7-zip and Peazip.

I've tried both of these, but neither recognises the file.

I can open it with Notepad - but the result is something that resembles the Dead Sea Scrolls.

Anybody got any thoughts on where to go from here?

I hope you are playing with a copy of the original file. You might try opening it with Access or Excel and see if they can read the format.

    Absolutely

I tried Excel, and got a strange result - here is a bit of it - much of it was just garbage:

    ABS 1p*Apstar 7,Thaicom 50 Express MD1#*>Insat 4A.RHorizons 2*aKazSat 20kChinaSat 5A"pST 2,Yamal 201,Measat 3a.ChinaSat 9 *Insat 4B0$

    DVB_C@$@&h)

Not sure if there are any clues there, but as you can see it managed to get some sense out of it.

I've got Access on my Office CD, but have never bothered installing it.

I used a UDF analyser on the Fileviewpro site, and it came up with:

    File Name userdb.udf
    UDF
    File Size 1.25MB
    File Type Unknown
    MIME Type application/octet-stream

    File Metadata
    File Size 1280 kB

I'll start the tedious enquiry process back through the meter supply chain, but any further comments here would be most welcome.

The posting at mentions the use of two programs in relation to opening an udf.file used in a satellite receiver.

Yes, I realise that the file in question is from a satellite meter, but the information might prove useful nonetheless.

"The basic no frills ALI Editor and the new standard in satellite editing software, MediaBox Editor Studio.

ALI Editor - File Types: Default Data File (.ddf), User Data File (.udf) and System File (.abs)
MediaBox Editor Studio v1.10_2013 by CeceLife - File Types: User Data File (.udf) and System File (.abs)"

Alieditor can be downloaded from (bottom of page) should you wish to try it.
