Default Who uses their computer as an answering machine?

Have been using Callsoft , Netcom modem and computer as my answering machine for about 5 years now and it works great
Some of the benefits are play different message for particular number very handy if you want to leave a message when one particular person calls say the boss when you take a sicky saying “sorry mal is not home he if you leave a message he will contact you when he returns from the hospital” forwarding the message as mp3 to email address and lots more

My problem is it is time to retire the office computer running ME yes ME and Netcom doesn’t support xp for my modem so I bought a dlink du562m which according to their manual supports caller id but it doesn’t.
Have been looking for the last few days and have come to the conclusion that it is a hit and miss don’t really want to buy Netcom again their support is non existent.

SO does anybody else use atapi software and what modem do you use

It could be that the software don't like the new modem you bought, they can be picky at times.

Back to your old modem if it was working you can try windows 2000 drivers they work happily under xp.

I have an old internal modem that i use for fax only, started with 98se, ME, XP, and Vista. The two latter ones I have been using Windows 2000 drivers.

id try the old modem with windows xp mate
    i reckon it'd work
pretty sure supported just means new drivers arent released for windows xp, saying that the old driver should still work fine if there is not 32bit vs. 64bit issue.

if your after a new software for telephony give trixbox a look at. theres the features your after plus lots lots more espicall to do with VOIP.

its open source as well so your free to write your own apps with the development kits.!

    best of luck

The old modem won't work with XP or 2000 it losses it's voice capabilities
Had a look at trixbox very interesting more for for a pabx setup but as I am in the communications game am going to have a play
Callsoft will receive and forward fax and do fax on demand where as trixbox only forwards incoming fax to a port
Think I will have to bite the bullet and try the netcom mega modem
    Thanks for the replies
