I just run the vacuum cleaner over the vents when I feel the need. I've even used compressed air to blow the dust out of my lappy on one occasion. It still serves me quite well despite having to replace the power and usb ports. on one occasion (nothing to do with dust). Some of the keys are worn out as it gets a fair pounding several hours a day. It lives on 7the lounge room floor when not in use, so not really a dust free environment. Whilst that instructable is valid, my 7 year old lappy is still serving me quite well.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

yep, i just blow mine out with compressed air.
pulling them apart can cause more dramas, exspecially if you are are impatient with fiddly little connectors....

Never had problems with an overheated laptop. Of course from time to time I clean the fan slots.

And: I've a Temperature / Memory widget running that constantly informs me about actual temperature / RAM-usage, updated every second.
