I believe the distinction between hyphenated and non-hyphenated compounds in Firefox and Windows Explorer is largely driven by PC's locale. For example Firefox is an US American product, hence it's default locale is en_US (English United States) and not en-AU (English Australia).

AFAIK in Firefox you can load the English Australian Dictionary as an Add-on to get rid off its default crazy American spelling:

How to fix it: Making the Australian dictionary work!

    by Pijuvwy May 6, 2015

So, I found how to fix it. The problem isn't in the dictionary; it's in Firefox refusing to un-Americanise itself. Solution:

Download Agent Ransack. You need this to search for files properly. Search the term "dictionaries:. You'll find a few folders with that name. One of them will contain only US English files ( en-US.aff and en-US.dic ) if your Firefox refused to use the Australian dictionary. For me the folder was C:\Program Files (x86)\Comodo\IceDragon because that's the version of Firefox I was trying to fix. Open the folder.

Also open the folder that DOES contain your Australian dictionary files ( en-AU.aff and en-AU.dic ). For me that was in an extensions folder, among other places.

Now, copy your Australian dictionary files into the folder containing your American files. Almost finished.

Next, to be sure, rename your American files. I added .was to give them a new file extension that would be easy to reverse if necessary.

NOTE: You'll need administrator access to move the files. You'll need to have file extensions visible (set that in Folder Options control panel).

For me always all is thinkable.
And it was OP who narrowed down the crash's cause: depends on how compounds are written, hyphenated and/or non-hyphenated.

OP should have provided Firefox's Crash Report - which is accessible via entering about:crashes in address bar, to get out the real cause.

or even try system restore to an earlier time when you thought it was ok

( ....... then run Malwarebytes & spybot & CCcleaner & Antivirus, etc .... then do a disk cleanup & delete any shadow copies of System Restore & maybe a disk error check)

Use System Restore Explorer I've introduced , instead of the Windows's inbuilt system restore feature. With System Restore Explorer you can select what to be restored!

That would help if it was known what is gone wrong, isn't it?

In Windows 7 creating an system restore point is scheduled by "Task Scheduler". Typically the system backup is scheduled to be run at PC's startup, and at midnight every day.
So, if for example Firefox has been updated before it went going wrong, and the next system backup hasn't been run yet - see above, then with System Restore Explorer you first of all can try to restore the Firefox folder to its pre-updated state. If this doesn't correct the issues, you then finally can run Windows's inbuilt System Restore, too, which will re-set contents of the complete system partition ( commonly C: ) - what in most cases isn't wanted at all.

Add to that equation the explorer with the same problem and tell us what would you select to update?

    You mean restore?

Windows Explorer is part of Windows OS. I must admit my knowledge of Windows OS is too little to determine which system folders/files I'ld have to select in System Restore Explorer to get Windows Explorer only restored.

So if Windows Explorer seems to have gone wrong - especially after a recent update, I'ld look into "Windows Update" which KBs (updates) recently got installed, would look at Microsoft's site if one of these KBs relate to Windows Explorer, and if such a KB relates to Windows Explorer, I simply would - by means of "Windows Update" uninstall this KB.

thanks but i tried for hours , i removed ff and all traces did a restore on explorer
re-installed ff and still same issue.

ran a virus checker and malabytes - cccleaner and still same problem

so in the end had a spare drive so threw it in and install a clean os.

i still have the drive as it was so in time i will have another look and
    try and work it out.

There is another malware cleaner about I used the other day which looks at things a little different & picks up suspect files & addware in registry & OS folders that others don't.
It's even suggested for use on other Virus checker/addware/malware cleaner websites as a usable "Second Opinion Malware cleaner."

It found a little annoying bug on my PC called "webhp" (Google redirect) that I manually deleted & now am clear of it.
Malwarebytes did not detect it!! However Malwarebytes antiexploit blocked my browser from going to the unsafe cloned Google site.

It's free to scan your PC & manually clean out the files as often as you like or you have to pay a subscription if you want it to clean & protect your PC.

    It's called Hitman Pro 3

Worth trying on your removed drive.
    Cheers, Tiny
