would something like this work
plug into
That should work. I've tried the CAM on an internal TBS 6928 card with no problems. But this CAM will only unlock 1 service at a time, which would render it useless in a server-based multi-room setup like yours. The CAM which can decrypt up to 8 services at once costs around $750.
There's some feedback here that the activation process is difficult for these CAMs because they're not intended for personal use. Single-service ones are easy to activate, so not sure if they block or flag applications for the multi-service ones.
Only being able to watch one channel is fine its more of just being able to watch it in any room i choose

It may be worth doing a costing on a few standard decoders along with a cheap?? digital modulator. Plenty of space above ch50 after the restack. It may not be the ideal way to achieve what you need but might be a cost effective solution. If your system has provision you might also be able to back feed IR through to "a single" decoder to add some flexibility to users.
sorry to bump but does anyone know how much heat a cam & smartcard can handle? using a TBS5980 and its getting pretty warm just dont want to damage the card
i do this....
I use a Happauge Colossus is my main server.
I have the dsd4121 connected to that via hdmi.
Tune the colossus to work like a tv tuner card. pass through to tvheadend.
I can only view the channel that the dsd4121 is tuned to but with an ir extender i can change channel easily enough.
