    Default Tap Washers :(

Can anyone recommend a decent type of tap washer?
I'm sick and tired of squealing or vibrating (depending on which washer I use) hot water taps.
There must be something out there that lasts more than a month.

The dome tap washers work well !!
When I was a kid, I used to have an imaginary friend. I thought he went everywhere with me. I could talk to him and he could hear me, and he could grant me wishes and stuff too. But then I grew up, and stopped going to church.

yes they work very well as long as there is not any nick's or imperfection on the seat.

when changing the tap washers i will always go to plumbers co-op etc ( real plumbers store )
and get my washers from there , for hot water use the red rubber and i always machine my seat
if needed but i have the tools to do so.
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

I think I have a Hydroseal in there atm but I'm sure it has a white seal not black - it makes the whole tap and pipe vibrate, as if the washer is jumping up and down.

Diavalo, are those red ones rubber or like the old reddish ones you could buy years ago made from some other kind of material.

rubber, if as you mentioned it feels like its bouncing - shaking etc
the trick is with the plastic washer is to squash the stem a little
so it needs to be pushed in hard all the way in and it will stay in place and
    not do as you mentioned.

what you described is the washer sticking on the seat and water is running over the top
and not under it and as such bouncing it up and down.

But if it is the washing machine - dishwasher then it could be water hammer being
    caused by loose pipes

i know the feeling,my dear family do not think the tap is off unless they turn it that tight it is a wonder they did not snap the tap off

i ended up changing them over to mixer taps, expensive but the peace of mind of changing the taps washers weekly and reseating monthly and no more drip drip

    i consider worth the expense

Have you considered going to ceramic type and 1/4 turn spindles?

I would NEVER have the ceramic ones again. Regardless of what they say , they do wear. The slightest bit of solid matter that works its way between the discs will stuff it. The discs are not a replaceable item & the complete spigot assembly will need to be changed. A lot more expensive than a 30 cent washer

When i was doing maintenance work in sydney i used to do contract work
    for the waterboard as well.

I would know before hand where they were doing work on the mains and i
would then make sure people in the area knew who i was an within a few
weeks of any work on the mains i would make a killing on replacing
the ceramic units and also the flick mixers

Why well because when the mains are shut down all the rust
in the pipes drops and when the mains is turned on again all the rust
gets into everyone's system and killing the ceramics and clogging
    the mixers.

Must be the water here then I guess. I've had ceramics on the shower and the sink taps here for years without a worry in the world.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Same here enf. My ceramic tap in the laundry (only ceramic one) has been fine for about 6 years so far... probably shouldn't have said that eh.

Easy way to protect your investment is to place a filter on the main. Nothing too fine (unless you want to wash your clothes in "distilled" [read:filetered] water) just enough to remove the larger particles from it. Sorta like the day when a stocking across the tap would filter out the wrigglers from the rain water.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

if you have flick mixers make sure you have a main filter stops any shit getting to them & keeps the "some" of bugs out of the water as well.

Brilliant!! Don't forget to replace the shaft O Ring when you change the tap washer. Clean OFF any crap on that shaft otherwise water will leak up the shaft when opening the tap

I replaced the washer in one of the laundry tubs so many years ago that I can't remember when. It'd have to be more than 20, and it only just started a very very very slow (1 drip in 10 mins) leak recently. I can't remember what I put in it back then but it more or less turns off like you are turning the handle into a solid block of iron. It just bottoms out hard and stops the water dead.

This is the type I've used. (after little success with several other types)

I think this is also the type Mods referred to in post #2.

There is a cheaper version in nylon, but I prefer the heavier brass type.

Just be weary that if you use those to not use a 'heavy hand' with them as I find that if you give it the extra 1/4 turn to make sure its closed that those type deform quickly.

Or maybe I just had bad luck.
