[Pre Windows 8.x] Fake 'Blue Screen of Death' fraud
Actually a malicious software simulates a deceptively real looking blue screen, which informs the user about an alleged problem on the infected PC. Mouse and keyboard are disabled so that users can't make any input. At the end of the error message, it's said user should call the Microsoft support. Referenced on a free telephone number.
But the alleged toll free call can be quickly expensive: instead of the Microsoft support scammers are waiting at the other end of the line, people who want to sell PC owners pointless maintenance at usurious prices. In the worst case, the criminals remotely install additional malware, gathers in the background more information - such as the IP address and the exact version of Windows. Thus, it is possible to adapt viruses and Trojans specifically to the user's system hackers.
