    Default wii help please

    Hi,
Ive just got a wii and want to mod it, the serial number is LAH1058XXXXX, i had a look at wiitracker and it said

There is a 50% chance that your drive chip is a GC2-D2C
There is a 50% chance that the pins on your drive chip are not cut

so whats the best chip? i have a wiikey, but not sure if this is alright for my serial number, im very new to the wii but have installed a few xbox chips, so the soldering skills are there just need a bit of direction on which chip?

    any help appreciated

    cheers

Id say a D2Pro chip. Preferably a d2e version one as you could have a d2e in that unit. You certainly couldn't use a Wiikey in that unit, they are only for the old units.

Alright, had a look inside, it has the d2c chip and the pins are not cut.
I already ordered a chip (d2pro d2e version) yesterday, so is there anything
else to be aware of? im a bit confused about which wiring diagram to use?
some need 9 wires others need a lot more, i spose when i see the chip i can
match it up to one on the suppliers website.

you need to use the 9 wire install for the d2c. The diagram you want is this one

After 4 hours i got the chip installed, the wii boots ok but it
will not take disks? even with 30 gauge wire it seems too big
for those tiny pins on the d2c chip, i will disable the chip
tonight and see if the problem persists, this may sound silly but
do you guys use some sort of magnifying eye piece? or do you
all have really good eye sight? i was crosseyed by the end of the night
(must have something to do with working all those years as a welder

    mate recheck the 'c' point
has in the past caused eject hassles and such
also check that you have wired on to the correct pins , as you say it is tiny and easy to get the wrong pin
if you need , take of the 30awg wire from the pins and run down the nearest electrical shop and get some 28swg enamel coated wire , this will make it easier to use
oh yeah most obvious thing is to check for shorts in those pins , do it directly from e and f on the modchip instead of the ic .
I do not use a magnifying glass , but I do have a pair of glasses that I need after screwing up my eyest doing this for years , they are for focusing , my eyes do not focus as quickly anymore , popping from soldering that sort of stuff to the pc screen has taken its toll . but really it is just a lot of practice lol

Yep sure can. Though if you want to use things such as the freeloader disc you wont want to update, but if your going to stick to PAL games only you might as well update.

Aaah, thanks mate, i think i will keep it simple and just stay with pal games

one other thing, is it worth putting some araldite on all the connections to the board, just to keep them in place, seems they're very light on, especially D, E and F

    cheers

I wouldn't, it would make it too hard to repair if you ever did get a dry joint. As long as you have soldered the wires to the chip well, they wont come off. For what its worth, I just use a 3 diopter magnifying lamp to install the chips.
