Finally got around to clean installing after using an upgraded windows 8.1 for a few weeks. So far no problems even after turning everthing I don't need off again. Apparently Windows 10 spies on me though so I'll dance naked in front of the web cam a few times. That'll learn em.

have installed Win 10 on my desktop, upgrade from Win 7 Pro 64 bit, after an initial issue rolled back to 7, sorted it and then back to 10, been running all good now for a couple of weeks

if I now want to replace my C drive in the computer and reinstall what's the process, rather not reinstall 7 and upgrade again if it can be avoided, would rather just go straight to Win10 but not sure if that will work, anyone had to do this yet to know the best way to handle it or what's possible?

The only problem I have with Win 10 is the desktop icons not staying the size I set them to.
Every time I re-boot they revert to their default size, I wish Microsoft would hurry up and fix this issue.

Other than that, everything else seems to run fine.

I can confirm that all you need do is boot from the W10 disk and just let it load, (no need to install W7 first) When it asks for the product key, just skip it. This version of Windoze in many ways is one of the easiest to install. I actually attempted to re-load W7 from my recovery disks on my lappy yesterday only to find that one of the disks were corrupt. I was attempting to prove a fault with customer's computer which led me to to that. Anyway, long story - short, I then placed my W10 disk in and, including re-partitioning the drive I was up and running again (including all my apps) in about 6 hours (which included watching TV, cooking tea, etc.) The actual Windoze bit was probably about an hour.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

thanks, just wasn't sure if replacing the hard drive was going to be an issue from a reactivation perspective, had read about skipping the product key prompt but everything I'd read was assuming no hardware changes

I've experienced once you upgraded Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, and then try to install ( no rollback! ) Windows 7 Pro again using it's original disk, its setup refuses to install Windows 7 Pro.

I wouldn't expect that, will be installing on a new hard drive though

No, that is not correct, Joe, I always elect to re-partition and re-format on a "new install" and the machine was happy enough to a)boot from my recovery media, and b)re-partition and re-load. My problem was such that it threw up a "could not read filename.exe" from disk2 even though I had installed disk2 in the machine.

Actually just thinking about it. Prior to the failed W7 install, I did actually have a successful W7 load from a set of disks which were not correct for the machine, threw up a "Windoze not genuine error" - this was then that I realised I'd used the wrong disks. When I used the correct disks I got the dud filename error.

    To recapitulate:
    I W7 - working
    I upgraded to W10
    I had W10 loaded - and working
    I re-installed W7 - not genuine
I then installed W7 - correct but failed
I then formatted the disk and re-loaded W10 - with which I have made this post.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

So if you say it's not correct then it's not correct? FYI: It happened to me as described. Tried it 5 times in a row. Point.

So are you saying that Win7 Pro setup doesn't even get to the partitioning option?

You do understand the irony of you making this statement, or should I say question, don't you?

    Exactly.

    SETUP.exe's messages were, IIRC,

    copying temp files
    starting
    an unexpected error occurred
    please restart setup

It's not necessary to provide here a solution, this because the computer in between has been thrown into e-Waste, it was a very old computer, not worth to keep - battery was defective, optical drive was defective, 1 HDD of the 2 HDDs was defective, don't know what else was defective!

Well seeing as you can read errors the Graphics card and monitor/screen worked.
