Question Windows update still running after 3 hours ...

Dell Inspiron 580 running Win 7 Pro x64. Went to shut down this afternoon to move the computer only to be told that the system was installing updates (31 updates!). It took about 30 minutes to get to update 27 ... and is STILL running update 27 some 2.5 hours later.

Any thoughts about what MIGHT be happening, and how to resolve it? I *guess* I can wait overnight, but would like to know what I should do if its still running in the morning ...

    Thanks

It is not asking you to accept something to install something ....? in the background .... in the task bar ?

No background/taskbar. In process of shutting down after logging off ... Can still link to it using TightVNC and this machine, but no access to controls

You could look see if anything is actively running in Processes in Task manager (right click in task bar & select processes Tab ...... look for anything with numbers running)

If it continues ....& appears to be frozen ...... you may have to power it off leave it a few minutes & see if it starts up ok ..... (it may still try to finish installing updates at startup)

Still no Taskbar. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything either (even when pressed twice ...) so no access Process Manager

Just don't want the hassle of a half installed update scrambling Windoze ...

My experience with different Windows editions in the past: A hard reboot helps.

Thanks! Useful link. Looks like I'll have to work my way through it. Hopefully will be able to fix without too many troubles ...

Bit the bullet and did a hard shutdown. After a minor hiccough, it started up fully.

Have now attempted to shut it down for the night and ... 'Installing update 1 of 31 ...'

Here's hoping I don't get up to find it hanging on #27 again ...

Thanks to all who have tried to help.

Just saw the thread...same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I had to resort to powering off and on, thankfully it rebooted ok and the next lot of updates were fine.
Since then on windows 10 and all is well.
