Default Setting up Gmail in Outlook

It seems simple enough. I have enabled IMAP on the server side (i.e. in my gmail acct) Have tried many and varied ways to set it up in Outlook 2010 (I had it working some time back but I'm stuffed if I can make it work now. Always falls over trying to contact the server. I've tried setting the outgoing ports to those recommended by gmail and followed their instructions to the letter but, even when I let Windoze (10 or 7) try and discover the settings for itself it always fails contacting the server! I have my ISP's account and a hotmail account happily working but, since a re-load some time back gmail has refused to play ball. Prior to the re-load gmail was happily working with Outlook, heck I even had it working with Thunderbird for a while. Can anyone throw any light on the subject?

    settings
    Outgoing same as incoming

    imap.gmail.com (also tried googlemail.com)
    Port 993
    Using SSL

    smtp.gmail.com (see above)
    Port 587 (I also tried 465)
    tried TLS, SSL and Auto

Any suggestions as to where I can go from here. I couldn't even set it up on another machine of mine. It's only gmail that is the issue.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

I have it working on my Outlook system at work, but I'm stuffed if I know the changes that have to be made.
If you don't get satisfaction tonight I'll post my settings Monday morning
    Cheers
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.

Thanks Seymour, I've tried on and off over the last few months, I really need to spend more effort on it.

    This works for me;

    I'm using Outlook with Gmail:

Most of the settings shown above are the same...except I'm using POP, and the Server Port Numbers are different:

    Incoming Server (POP3): 995

    Outgoing server (SMTP): 465

The Incoming Mail Server is pop.gmail.com

Nup! Still does not like the server!

Out of curiosity, Seymour, which version of Outlook are you using? I've not seen those message boxes (as in your screen shots) since I stopped using Outlook Express about 10 years ago.

Can I assume you have set Gmail for either Imap or POP ?? in the gmail setting ??

Honestly said I imported gmail to outlook.com via outlook.com's import tool: Worked without any hassles.

    Info:

Wondering why one doesn't also use outlook.com's import tool? BTW I'm running Windows 10.

I had it working under Imap some time back, Seymour so that is what I attempting.

@Jwoe... I could easily set up gmail to forward messages to my MSN account which, from the look of it, is what this "import" feature is about, that is not the point. I have three separate email accounts for three separate reasons and I wish to keep them that way. Gmail is the least used, so it is not as critical as the other two which both work.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

It might be that Outlook 2010 might be a common issue! Oh well, I'll wait until I can look at 2015.
