These fuel/performance figures are like those given by those seeking to invest your Money, pure imagination.
As I doubt there is no real criteria used to evaluate the performance of a vehicle, its a free for all.

A guy we travelled with recently owns a Golf GTI.
He was telling how it has an oxygen feed line into the exhaust.
I asked him if this was to burn unburnt fuel perhaps....
He laughed.... Said, nope, just to pass emissions

Years ago I bought a 4 Cylinder engine out of a Toyota to fit a VC Commodore.
I believe the Holden version was called a 'Star Fire'.

It had this 'thing' mounted on the drivers side and driven by the fan belt that had a 1 inch pipe from it to what we found was a 'Non Return valve' and it then branched into 4 pipes that joined into the exhaust manifold above each piston.

When I first saw 'it' I thought it had something to do with A/C but we worked it out it was a AIR PUMP and all it did was add fresh air into the exhaust gas which as oceanboy was told, it would give a lower emissions reading from the Tail Pipe.

What a pure bloody Con Job !!!

The engine would still be producing exactly the same amount of pollutants but before it exited the Tail pipe, it was diluted by the additional fresh air.............

I pulled all the crap off and blocked off the pipes by bending them over and filling them with Muffler Putty.
By removing this pump, I probably helped both the economy and output as the engine didnt have this rubbish to drive.

I am pleased to see nothing has changed in the automotive industry over the last 20 years, their still bullshitting to Joe Public.

Its a EGR valve boys (exhaust gas re-circulation valve), yes it does assist emissions and its been used by virtually every car maker from the 80's.

My 1970 Toyota crown had an air pump that pumped air into the exhaust to help with emissions.

I suppose that was the forerunner to EGR.....

Is this the one that sits on top of the tappet cover and sucks out the 'fumes' and feeds them back to the engine via the Carby?
It did away with the good old breather pipe that used drip oil and smoke as the engine aged.

I thinks that's the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) - feeds the volatile vapor off the hot oil back into the inlet manifold so it gets used for fuel.

EGR units are on the exhaust manifold and have solenoids that open a valve to let exhaust gases into the intake stream.

Default VW in Trouble??? Seems any Scandal is good for sales

I remember some members here calling this was the end of VW, they would go broke, etc etc

    Well

The maker of Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda and other brand name cars sold 10.83 million vehicles, beating its 2017 record of 10.74 million cars by 0.9%. Marketing head Christian Dahlheim said increasing sales in a global passenger car market that contracted by 1.2% last year was “a great result”.Jan 11, 2019

What a total crock of Do good gooder shit this has all been.

Boo hoo, these cars put out a bit more emissions. Truth be known much of these emissions controls are a con anyway. They cause the cars to burn more fuel. What is coming out of the vehicle at any time may be cleaner but the very fact they burn more fuel with these emissions measures means the overall amount of emissions is higher.

The whole thing that people could be so upset and offended that their car put out more pollution when I'll guarantee not 1% of owners knew or paid any attention to the numbers is just a lefty PC green washed load of crap.
The only reason it was made such a big deal out of is there was compensation money in it and everyone wanted a slice of the pie.

still , at about $1200 compensation per owner , thats nothing compared to thier loss of resale value because of this debacle. and i suspect the "increase" in sales figures is only because they are dumping thier cars cheap into third world countries where emissions controls are not cared about anyway

Great for second hand buyers though
Then again, i'm not sure you'd want a second hand VW of that era.... Unless you have some spare turbos in your back pocket

Most people i've known that have a VW Petrol of Diesel Turbo, have done a Turbo at around 90K
VW forums are awash with multi page Turbo Failure pages

To answer your question, as in what's wrong with them?
No idea, i've never had a reason to know, i just know what i've read and been told, as i was considering a second hand VW Transporter a while ago
This is the reason i stopped looking.....
