Default No video after post boot

Have a laptop, all appears OK in BIOS, but no video at all past the BIOS, tried external monitor, still no video. No HDD activity either(lights or noise), so I think it is software. Have taken HDD out and can see data OK. Try windows recovery, install detects it but cannot repair as repair option does not appear. Is the MBR stuffed, what can I try to fix it?

    Cheers

boot into safe mode by pressing function key F5 during boot up.

    Then select "vga mode".

nothing comes up past bios, ie no option to go into safe mode. Reason I thought it was software was when trying to run repair, it finds the existing OS, but R (Repair) Option available....

Just to add, I can now get the boot options, ie safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, hangs a few seconds are selecting safe mode... still software????
