WDC WD10EDS-00M2B0 reports as 33Mb

This is a 1TB drive that was working fine until I re-loaded windoze on the Box. Now all it reports is its cache size! Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics - DLDIAG for Windows also reports the size as 33Mb and SMART passed. i.e. it thinks there's nowt wrong with the drive!!!! I'm open to any suggestions as to how I might recover some of the data off the drive because, so far, nothing I have thinks that there is anything to look for. I was not too stressed about losing a few movies but I just realised that that particular drive also contained all the Raw footage of kids weddings! As the original footage lives interstate it would be easier to recover it than attempt to get a copy given that each individual file was 100+ Gb long.

Any suggestions, polite or otherwise, gratefully received!

you reloaded windoz
on the whole 1tb? was it partitioned?
did it format it or just install xtra windoz causing a windoz.old in c drive?
throw some data recovery on there, see what it finds

No! Not on that drive! Ha ha. I actually have 7 drives connected to that machine. I had to unplug all but one to install W10! I got W10 running and then plugged them all back in again. This one is actually reporting as 33Mb in BIOS!!!!

whats it say about it in disk management though?
i just uploaded pdr (data recovery) maybe a virus though if joe scans it

if you can identify the drive in it, you have a good chance off finding the data on it

Another good recovery program I found recently is Disk Drill I used it to recover files from a couple of 2tb drives.

I also checked the drives with R-Studio, both programs found the same files.

Thanks fellers, Have downloaded both of them, so will attempt to use them when the machine decides that I am allowed to get into windoze. It's now sitting there with the pretty window and "please wait" for the last 10 minutes. I'm beginning to think that something has clobbered my new W10 install and I may need to reload it again. Linux is beginning to look better every day.

What does the screen look like? So, or similar?



The point to note is – Is your machine looking dead? Or is it making some noise? Is the device’s light flickering or flashing? If so, then it is best to wait.

Some people reported it took almost 24 hours that Windows 10 installation completed. For what reasons ever.

The machine has booted, I suspect that the boot drive sata cable was not secure as I checked them all, ensured boot order is correct and I'm back in. As far as the Trojan is concerned, I'll deal with that one later. Phil, I had already used WD Lifeguard (see OP) and mick, your "trojan" would not recognise that the drive was any larger than the 31Mb reported by Windoze. Even "Disk Management" won't accept that the drive is any larger than that. I suspect that the drive is toast! What's worse is daughter has just told me she does not yet have the video of her wedding. I just hope that her eldest brother still has it as he did the recording.

edit: I am currently running an AVG scan on that machine and it hasn't picked up the trojan yet.

Sorry, mick, I misread the OP, your proggy was ok, it was Phil's that reported as a trojan, and I never installed that one because I had already gotten it from the WD site. I assumed that the "keygen" that you supplied with Disk Drill was reported as malware, which they seem wont to do. Yours is clean, that I can tell. It still did not work though.

Ignore me: I am confused! Didk Drill is the WD proggy that I had already run and only reported 31Mb on the drive. Phil's PDR has not thrown up any flags on my system either. MBAE hasn't flagged anything nor has AVG on my lappy. The MediaServer pc (the problem machine) has yet to throw up any concerns either.

Can't really hear it over the fans and the other stuff. I suspect that it is spinning up as it all reports as working, even if it misreports it's capacity.

If trying to restore the data there is no longer a current affair for you, then download Windows freeware HDD Capacity Restore v1.2 and run it.

It doesn't contain any trojan / virus etc.pp !!! Have run it against "Virus Total Scanner", which utilizes 55 scanners, Malwarebytes included.

Thanks Joe, already tried that one, the drive still only reports 33Mb! I've pulled it out of the machine and am going to try it in another machine later today 'cause all was well until I attempted a clean load of windoze 10.

as far as tojans, im not that stupid
most keygens, patches made for software report as virus's simply because they are made with vb

if you had done nothing but disconnect it then re-install it after win10 was
installed i would be firstly unplugging all the drives in the pc and only attaching
that one to booting the pc and going into the bios and see what it says.

Already tried that diavalo, I pulled it from the system for now and will plug it into another machine when I get five minutes, but it ain't looking good. I also realised today that I had about 80Gb of mp3s on there, too, bugga!

A quick search using Duckduckgo indicates the problem of a WD 1TB HDD showing only 33MB is not unknown.

Some have reported that the use of a program, HDD Capacity Restore Tool, running under Windows XP restores the drive to full capacity. See .

Ah! Upon reading back through the thread, I see that jwoegerbauer has already recommended the HDD Capacity Restore Tool in post #14, however the links I refer to might contain additional useful information.

Also, your decision to try the drive in another machine, perhaps also using Windows XP, in order that the HDD Capacity Restore Tool can be used (if indeed it requires WinXP), might yield a positive result.

On occasions, I have had to replace the logic board on a faulty drive with one from another known good HDD of similar brand, model and capacity. This serves to eliminate the HDD's logic board as the source of the HDD problem and also allows data retrieval from the "faulty" drive.

Don't despair; tackle the problem logically; don't give up....and keep us informed of your progress.

That HDD guru thread might be the solution seeing that this machine has a Gigabyte MOBO. Fortunately, I do have an XP machine available as I just retired one from service only the day before I attempted to upgrade this machine to W10. This drive fell over during the process and, hence, considered that it might have been an OS issue.
