It could be a bit of a loaded question, but I'm looking for recommendations for a laptop around the $500 to $600 mark. The laptop is for general use : study, watching videos, surfing the net. Definitely no gaming or video editing etc. A fairly modest laptop ought to do. The main criteria is that it is well put together and reasonably sturdy. It'll be a Christmas present for our daughter studying at uni.
Any recommendations or are they all much of a muchness in this price bracket?

I've always had a good run out of Toshiba.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
how about this
or
I think its joyce Mayne have a deal. You get upto $500 off it u give them your old computer
I got to go with the Toshiba too I'm afraid.
It'd be nice to see some decent info in this thread
Thanks fellas. Come to think of it, at my previous place of work, everyone had Toshiba laptops and they were given a pretty hard time yet still kept chugging along.
That thread in pc4u.org was good enough for me to get started, dolly - thanks for sharing.
I'm also looking for a more powerful laptop, the link gives good details about laptops, but the prices represent USA dollars, which makes then around AU$700-$900. Currently run an ASUS, but it is a bit old and slow now and have yet to find one that fits what I need for a decent price.
Toshiba has been a 50/50 in my case....I bought 2 a couple of years ago, i5's at around $800 each from memory.
One is still going, the other has problem after problem before dying completely. Build quality was poor......screen ribbon cable fell out inside within 6 months.
I have been using an Asus with an i5 for about 4 years now, daily. All good apart from the battery.
